Shipping in general

Being a resident of the United Kingdom, there are many MANY times where I would much rather purchase from the US (which is like a world where everything is 50% off compared to here :P). The problem that is of course put in place by the UK to make us pay exorbitant costs for our goods makes getting things from the US less simple however. I would like a friend from the US to send me 3 small books, yet the best he has found is shipping for $20 and this is excluding customs tax. Firstly, how is it that headfi members can help avoid customs tax, and who is it best to go to for cheap shipping to the UK?

It's really difficult, there's hardly any legal ways to avoid it.
