Why do people edit the price to $old?

Why do people edit the price of an item that has been sold to "$old"? It's really annoying when I want to see how much something is selling for. Is it ok to ask the seller how much they sold the item for?

Before the new classified system, there was no way to just close a listing.  So you would edit the title and price to Sold to stop inquiries and reflect the status of the classified.  Many still do it out of habit or because they don't know they can close.  There is no problem with asking a seller what they sold an item for, or even to post a thread asking what a fair used price would be.

It's to protect future sellers... A considerate thing to do, if not trolls and annoying lowballs would pester the seller.
I do that myself~ remove my listed price, once sold.
I strongly believe sellers have the right to list any price they want to and let buyers decide for themselves through pms.

Probably just to stop people from asking sellers if the item is already sold or not. The selling price is confidential between the seller and buyer, but it wouldn't hurt to ask the seller directly. biggrin.gif

I searched. When I search, all I find is a bunch of idiotic posts about how the OP should search. Oh look, we're continuing the tradition.

edit- But thanks to those who actually gave an answer.

Oh, wasting my time and creating confusion in an attempt to rig the market is really considerate.

Not really, if selling prices are shown, the prices will keep going down and down (like the Coles ad if you're in Australia).
