How to determine version of iPod Classic?

Thread Starter

So my family has an iPod Classic and I want to Rockbox it. I think Rockbox will work on it, but I just wanted to know how I could determine which version of the iPod Classic it is (ie. is it version 5 or 5.5?).

It has a color screen, rounded corners, shiny metal back, black face, and has a 30 GB capacity.

Yes you can rockbox it. But it's not an ipod classic. There a misconception that the 5 and 5.5g are classics. The ipod classic starts with the 6g(though 6g and 7g aren't the official names). The 5 and 5.5g are called ipod video. The 6g(80&160gb) and 6.5g(120gb classic isn't able to be rockbox. The 7g(160gb only) can be rockbox, but it isn't stable and requires completely removing the ipod firmware, so there's no dual boot option. But your version would be fine and is fully "rockboxable".
