What speakers should I get? [$299]

I was originally going for the Onkyo HT-S3400 5.1 Home Theater System, but I realized my laptop does not have an optical audio jack nor an HDMI one, and I don't think an RCA to 3.5mm adapter will do the system's audio any justice, especially playing from my laptop.

On a budget of $299, which laptop speakers would be suitable for compatibility with my laptop for optimal sound?

Thanks in advance.

The polk sub is said to be a bit weak, you should go with the dayton sub100 instead.

Okay, so I'll get those 3 items and the Dayton sub instead of the Polk one all from Newegg. I meant to include shipping in the $299, but I'm going to try and order these 3 from Amazon directly instead of Amazon sellers so I can get free shipping.

If anyone else would like to make suggestions before I make my purchase please feel free.

Will I also need to purchase any adapters or does the receiver come with the necessary cable(s) to hook everything up to my laptop?

Also, will the sound quality feel any different if I'm used to 5.1 surround sound?

Ah, the shipping is $55. That's too much...what other speakers can I get that'll match the sound of the Onkyo ones for my laptop?

You could get some cheaper speakers or receiver, these sony's are pretty decent http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000OG88KY/ref=sr_1_1_olp?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1317941559&sr=1-1&condition=new , $43 with free del.

It depends on your room, if it's a large lounge then you might miss the 5.1 if it's a bedroom your find the 2.1 system will work much better.

Should I go for a cheaper receiver if I don't plan on upgrading the speakers any time soon? (Probably a couple years)

It depends have much power you want, http://www.amazon.com/Lepai-Tripath-TA2020-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317943251&sr=8-1 , your also need speaker cable , a 3.5mm to stereo rca cable. Using a laptops headphone for speakers is a bad idea, high noise , disortition and not enough vrms, you ideally need a dac this is the cheapest option http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-D5-Digital-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B005LSV04G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317943447&sr=8-1 .

Wow, so I need a DAC, adapter, receiver, and speakers...would it be better sound if I just bought the Onkyo set and a new computer with an optical audio jack (or HDMI port)? (Since I get free shipping from Newegg for all orders.)

Ya one of the reasons i picked that Polk sub is cos for the $100 and under cat that would prolly be the best option and also Newegg free ship tongue_smile.gif You could also limit to $2.99 ship and $85 with promo code these Polk M30IIs which are a tad better than those M10s earlier

If u fine with used stuff search the Craiglist of your state and fish out a cheap stereo amp/receiver

The dac is only $25 , your need a dac for the Onkyo HT-S3400 aswell, your need the behringer uca202 because it has usb in and optical out and is way cheaper than a new pc.

I haven't heard them but this is what I plan on getting this Christmas for $279:

I'd personally get the Audiosource amp-100 and a couple of NHT Superzero 2.0. Then save some more and buy the Super 8 sub and a couple of Sanus euro foundation stands.

That's my dream stereo setup at the moment.
