The Audeze LCD-2 Ortho thread (New) - Page 382

I have the new pads on my LCD-2.

They're super nice... so plush and comfy. It's like two bunnies on my ears now. I love it.

Also I think they help me get a better seal.

Did you notice a sound difference? Just curious?

I did because they also replaced my drivers...

Unfortunately I can't tell what my LCD-2 would have sounded like with the harder older pads, since the drivers are now new.

What I do think of them overall is that they're much more balanced now, with more treble and air. They also have less perceived bass although it is still flat and extends very low. Even with this change however, the HE-500 still have more treble and is airier, but the gap isn't as huge any more. Plus the quality of the treble is better, the older LCD-2 was shelved and the little treble that existed was rough at times, now there is more treble and it's silky smooth. The mids do lose some of that lushness becuase of the tonality shift, although it's still quite lush on an absolute scale.

I cannot attribute any of these changes to the pads, I don't think they effect the sound too much, but I won't know for sure until I can try the older harder pads on mine and A/B, which will probably never happen because I LOVE the new pads. I want a huge pillow version of them so I can hug them to sleep.

Dang it, that certainly throws a wrench into the comparison of the effects of the pads. Did you have the LCD-2R1? Your comments pretty much jive with mine in terms of the LCD-2R1 vs. R2 drivers.

The new pads are comfy though...there is no going back for me.

Nope, R2 to R2. I think Audez'e kept messing with the tuning a bit to bring them closer to neutral. It's just a theory because every time I hear a newer pair it seems to sound a little more open/airier and the bass keeps shrinking. BUT given the limited sample size it could just all be product variation or mind confusion. But I believe what I believe.

Now I really wanna hear an R2 with the newer softer pads.

Actually the foam composition of earpads really affect the overall tonal balance, from what I've experienced with all my pad modding experience. "Lighter" / more porous foam tend to make the bottom end leaner and subsequently pushing forward the upper end; vise versa for "heavier" foams.

Even when encased by leather?

I honestly think if there are sonic differences it would be from the distance of the drivers to the ear, as the pads compress more and bring them closer.

But honestly, I'm sure Audez'e did their own testing and found the differences minimal enough to get rid of the old pads. If Audez'e was smart, it was either an improvement or such a slight difference that it was hard to tell any difference.

Did you get the leather pads ? I replaced my LCD2.1 leather pads and headband to vegan and I hear less bass.

Someone tell me why ? or it's just me. ?

I never heard the rev.1s, but I can tell you that I have the new pads on the LCD-2s and I dont consider these bass-heavy at all. Not sure if it's the pads, but I don't think I'm hearing the type of bass that matches the descriptions I've heard previously. The bass is great, mind you...beautiful, clean, natural...but maybe the pads impact in that area? I dunno, but the current pads are friggin amazing.

Just you. I had both leather a d vegan side by side, and they had the same exact bass. However, the vegan was slightly faster. Veeeery slightly.

I no longer own my LCD-2 R1 or R2...just have the LCD-3s right now with a pair of LCD-X on the way. Looking forward to giving them (LCD-X) a try!
