??? I've heard the LCD-2s with some very affordable gear like the O2, speaker amps, portable amps, etc... AND I've heard them with better gear. There is no going back as the differences were rather stark.

I'm going to go with Macedonian on this onebeerchug.gif

By his own logic, he only heard the gear, didn't spend any real time with it. So he has as no real base for saying that buying that gear is a waste of money on the LCD2.

I think allot of you would be surprised how good your headphones sound out of a rane mixer. Separate headphone eq's and 1/8 and 1/4in headphone outs say's to me they put a decent amount of thought into the headphone outs. Enough juice to start a mack truck as well.

I'm thinking of selling my Compass 2 and settling for my receiver, as it's done a bang up job with everything I've thrown at it. With my Kingsound Emperor stat with it's M-10 amp soon to make it's way to me, I won't be needing an audiophile headphone amp anymore. I might get the ODAC again just to feed it to the M-10, though not sure. I'm more or less done climbing up the gear chain. If I get another headphone that isn't a stat, I'll just run them out of the receiver.

A headphone doesn't come with an engine, and the engine and amp drive both. In racing, teams pick a chassis, engine, tires and drivers. And the car will only go as fast as the weakest link.

........Plain poor analogy. Go google the term and learn how to use it before you construct an argument around it.

Simple analogy...but I guess you think your fuel one was better. rolleyes.gif Or you might not be a racing fan.

Analogy:

EDIT: Chassis and headphone are both driven by engines and amps (you know...give them power to do what they do). Fuel would be equivalent to current/voltage IMO.

Going from debating to personal insults now?

I believe the personal insult was towards me. I fully know what an analogy is and saying otherwise is not kewl by any means. Sheesh. rolleyes.gif

Or you might not be a racing fan.

It wouldn't matter whether I was racing fan - that's utterly irrelevant. You just used a bad analogy and can't accept it.

Anyway, oh yeah that LCD is a nice headphone.

You disagree...no problem, but I happen to think its a way of showing that sound quality like speed in a car is about several factors and the "weakest link". Not just transducers. Fuel? That I don't get sorry AND I won't tell you to google the word analogy either. rolleyes.gif

Great insight. Believe in tethering and sensory memory. Since headphones don't come with an engine, I tether my LCD-2s to multiple engines from time to time and find tethering to "big rig" (HT associated sources) keeps the sensory memory stimulated.

If he has than I think there is a good chance he found one that really transforms the lcd's. I did find one out of eight that worked in the portable world and if he is willing to travel down that road I think he deserves a pat on the back cause you never know one of us mite have the fortunate opportunity to get a 1k amp and we will need some input from someone who's been down that road.

At the same time like I said before with inflation factored in allot of those late 70's speaker amps would be in the several k range in today's prices. There were allot of hippies with allot of money and allot of records and I heard my headphones out of a cheaper realistic receiver (only $35) and it was pretty sweet. Marantz was silky and that was only $150.

I'd say so. Actually I've owned about 6 or 7 through the years alone. And my journey has stopped with the HeadAmp GS-X.

Same here. I think if it comes down in the end is everyone is entitled to there own opinions. If you think the LCD2's can be driven from any amp and sound roughly the same, good for you, if you have the money to burn and believe in massive scaling differences with expensive amps, good for you. Now let's all calm down and have beerchug.gif.

+1 to this :)

Anyhow, the LCD-2's are a fantastic phone that everyone here is most probably a fan of, I kinda feel debating about how good a $1000 headphone gets is already pretty silly, they sound fantastic regardless, it's just a matter of high your threshold for "fantastic " is ;)
