You said you haven't heard it on the best, so just keep an open mind.

I haven't, yet I've heard it from so many devices, and the sound remained largely the same (literally like 95% on all devices).

If it was something like the HE-6, I'd agree on getting much better gear. But the LCD2 is not like that.

But anyways, let's all be dreamers and belittle anyone who buys the LCD2 with lesser equipment, because to his eyes, it's a waste of money. rolleyes.gif

Only people with his kind of exorbitantly priced purchases deserve the LCD2, it seems.

HD650 off a $500 10watt diamond difference Audio-GD SA-31 amp and ODAC (known to compare to the Benchmark DAC-1)

Or HD650 off the same $500 SA-31 amp and a 32bit Compass 2 DAC/AMP ($500)

vs

LCD2 off a $175 Marantz receiver I got on Ebay

The LCD2 smoked the HD650.

But again, these devices are hardly classified as "end game" or "top choices". So I'm not surprised by your findings. Why spend a whopping $1000 on headphones and not worry about getting the most out of them? I would rather define a total budget and fit all gear within it. Now if someone is looking for a short term stop gap, that's fine.

This is where the crux of the debate is.  How well does the LCD2 scale?  They scale.  It'll just cost you to find out.

I'm just trollin'. Seeing as the absurd x% ya'll figure seems to stick.

It's as clear as day for me, with better gear phones will scale.

Some more than other's. And not at all based on price tags.

Let's agree to disagree.

I'll continue to enjoy the LCD2 off my paltry Mixamp for gaming. That'd blow your mind.

Or rather, I would, but I've sold the LCD2 for another headphone. Fickle person needs variety.

Yeah, you can't beat that combo at that price, I don't think.  What about the HD650 and the Marantz?  How did that sound?  I wish I had HD650's.

I said this way back in my mini review for the LCD2'S out of all the flagships we have, the LCD2's and HE-500 are probably two of the headphones I'd say from experience to not scale as much as other cans in a similar price category. Even with the HE-500 driven on speaker taps, little differences

For me.

The LCD-2.2 on the Magni (That's the only small amp I've had)

vs.

The HD650 on my B22 was miles ahead in every category, bass quality included.  The LCD-2.2s still had bass quantity but with that amp it wasn't at it's best.

I feel the 650 is able to scale way higher than the LCD2.2.

Maybe that's just me.

The receiver actually MSRP'd at like $750 when it came out, so maybe that wasn't the best comparison. It's a great receiver.

The HD650 sounded damn good off it.

But what about the LCD2 on something like the LF vs the HD650 on the same?

I disagree on the HE-500..  They will scale and get better at what they do..  From my experience..

Not surprised.  I wish I could convince more people on a small budget to consider vintage amps.  Such amazing value.

Never heard the LF

I compared the HE-400 planar (similar to the LCD2 in drivability) off the SA-31 vs Magni (direct comparison). The HE-400 sounded 99% the same. Two very different amounts of power, 99% the same sound.

I just don't buy the hype on how much headphones like the LCD2 need in power to sound as close as can be to their best without spending ridiculous amount of money.
