Most important music tech invention

I was just curious as to what all ya'll think is the most important technological innovation that has brough music to where it is today: readily avalible and of decent quality (for the most part). THe above is simply ment as a list of a few obvios choices, don't hesitate to mark other.

Oh yes, please say why you think what you do.

I say SS amps are the most important innovation. They are realativly cheap and are much more durable and have longer lifespans than tubes. I think they really opened up the idea of everyone being able to enjoy music when they wanted to, where they wanted to: leading to the prevalance of music everywhere today.

my vote goes to the wheel, without the wheel no way it gets to where it is today-long ass walk otherwise

wax cylinder

I voted for "wax cylinder" because it was the first instance that I know of, of a recorded performance.

My second choice would be amplification.

I'd say radio... It made music readily available to a wider range of people.

I voted "other". The *ability* to record sound for later playback is the single most important technical invention for music followed by the synth.

Dynamic microphone/speakers:
First of all, you gotta record the sound to be able to play it back. Secondly, would you rather listen to just one frequency range?

I'd say it should be the guitar pickup, or we'd still be listening to banjos.

Lol, I think he meant electronic inventions.

Gotta second the vote for radio.

Radio as well, without it sales of cd's, vinyl and cassettes would never reach such a wide audience.

Actually, that was one of the worst inventions, as they got so popular that the recording industry decided to use them as a standard for sound quality, which now sucks in general when you listen over a high rez system...

I voted for the LP because prior to the long playing record, the music industry focused on the single format and making a "hit". With the LP came albums like Sgt Peppers, Quadrophenia, and Thick As A Brick. I think that help push music forward, if not so much the technology.
