ipod classic schematic

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I'm under the impression the ipod doesnt do a "straight pass" to the headphone jack. For example my Gamma2 F++ does digital until the wolfson micro chip, then it converts to analog, sends to opamp, and from opamp it goes out of the analog outputs.

I'm under the impression the ipod does some tomfoolery with the audio rather than keeping it "pure" and that is the reason people want things like a line out dock cable or a cypherlabs algorythm solo or the redwine audio cable (which I thought was just an LOD)

I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can see what exactly the ipod does with its music. I dont need schematics or names of particular chips or anything but it would be cool to see the path data takes through the ipod.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. The iPod probably sends output from the DAC to its amp. Why would it do something else? Like what?

And I think you're taking the wrong approach to the aftermarket stuff.

Most of that only exists as a reason to sell more stuff to people. Maybe it does something, maybe not.

The biggest problem with the iPod is that is is a popular, mainstream item. People want to distinguish themselves from the masses, so they buy a bunch of accessories. Expensive ones. To be fair, if other players sold in such volume there'd be a bunch of doodads for those, too.

My take is that an iPod is just fine by itself. No, not the best, but good enough.

All the little upgrades are sort of like hiring a professional caterer to make primo hollandaise sauce for your McNuggets. Or putting a giant wing on an economy car.

Nothing wrong with McNuggets or economy cars (I tend to like both), but there's no point in dressing up the ordinary. Appreciate it for what it is and put your money towards real gear.

I know people who have spent more on precious little portable things than I spent on my speaker rig.

My speaker rig is better. A lot better.

I keep an iPod around because I enjoy it for what it is. No matter what I spend on mods and accessories, it will never be better than what I usually listen to.

People who took it apart determined that it doesnt follow the simplest path, which would be HDD -> software reads digital data -> DAC -> Amp ->volume control circuit -> headphones.

they said that both before and after the dac there is a series of other chips that it sends data to, and that results in not the cleaneast sound signature.

I do agree though that many of the accessories you see for it are not worth the money. like fostex hp-p1. if you are traveling quite literally all the time and have some sort of burning desire to listen to 100% top notch quality no matter where you are because you never spend a waking minute at your home then I can see how it would be justifiable to spend that kind of money on a meager ipod. However, for the average person I dont see how anything more than line out dock and headphone amp is necessary.
