Review: Violectric V800 DAC - Page 19

Robert at aphrodite says that v800 are the most tube like dac.  He went on to say that most others are very digital.

I'm interested in the v800 and his comment makes me want it more but I don't think any of the reviews I read seem to indicate tube likeness.

I'm hoping that the v800 will really complement the v200.

Perhaps he means "tube like" with respect to it not having digital glare and harshness. A lot of DACs, even really good sounding ones, struggle with that. V800 does a great job in that area - among the best out there in my experience. It's got gobs of detail but doesn't ram it down your throat or serve it up in a razor sharp fashion.

+1

My dealer was saying that he has sold many units of the V800 to people that has become disillusioned with Dacs that are twice the price and delivers the glare :)

I for one would vouch for the longevity of the using the V800 in Headphone/IEM based system and it would be the last component I would change and hence my earlier comments of "the V800 is the star in the V200/800 stack"

Probably, I would only replace the V800 on my desktop system with the Wadax Pre 1 ....tongue_smile.gif

Thanks for the comments.  I too found many dacs too edgy and sharp.  Hence my apprehension.

I had the same problem with amplifiers too.  I found many were too bright for my taste.  The v200 is the first amp that I found feeling happy and content with. Now that I finally have an amplifier I'm happy with, I think the v800 may suit my preference too.

thank you

Thanks mate,

Can't help because I always thought my current DAC(HP-A3) didn't match for my V200.

I hope I can take some rest over my GAD(gear acquiring disorder) by this purchase :)

if i run the V800 XLR outs to my Dynaudio monitors, will the unbalanced outs sound OK with a headphone amp?  also what's the "ideal" (sub $100) way to connect the V800 to a Mac?

thanks.

thanks.

Using both the XLR and RCA creates no ill effects sonically.

I was at one time driving both the V200 via XLR and the L3/LLP via RCA simultaneously and both amps sounded sensational.

If not mistaken, I think Violectric suggests using a USB cable from computer to V800 is best, with limitation at 24/96.

Today I received my V800 and rigged up with my V200.

Simply amazing. it really shines my V200!!

I didn't think a DAC could make such difference,

Clearly and totally I was wrong.

Cool. What were you using before to feed the V200?

Hi project86,

I was using Fostex HP-A3.

HP-A3 is very nice DAC/AMP for its price range, but now I can't go back.

BTW, several days before I threw an e-mail for some questions to Lake People,
And I was very impressed because I received detailed and polite reply from Mr. Fried Reim himself.

Of course that e-mail helped me a lot.

Lake People/Violectric have great customer service indeed!!

Nice! Oh man, I'm so close to pulling the trigger on that stack myself...

I've pulled the trigger already. My V800 will step in thursday or wednesday I'll guess. Maybe a bit later. I'll take some photos with my new Pentax K-30. My girlfriend is really going mad with me these times. :D
