STAX SRM-006tS one channel only. Tube failed? Any ideas?

Just fired my STAX SRM-006tS up this morning -- after a week or so of it lying dormant -- to discover it playing one channel of audio only. On inspection, it appears as though only one of the two tubes is glowing. Trying input 1/2/3 makes no difference as does either earspeaker output socket. Power and input lights appear as normal on the front of the unit.

I haven't opened the case up yet. It’s only about 2 months old and hasn’t done a lot of work!

Any suggestions prior to me boxing it up and sending it to STAX?

Thanks!

Cheers
Chris

Welcome to HF. There's a Stax thread here. You could try posting your question there because some of the most knowledgeable people around lurk there.

One of the tubes has possibly died - have you tried switching them around and seeing if it's still the same side or the other one that doesnt work?

Sounds like one tube failed.

It has Electro Harmonix 6CG7 tubes and switching them over made the opposite channel work OK so it would appear to be a tube failure. Not sure of the root cause though.

Have read the Tube Change and Biasing thread and consider this is something I’d be quite capable of doing. Is it best to go for some RCA “clear tops” (NOS) or stick with the Electro Harmonix? I’m assuming that making the latter choice would enable me to just replace one tube and rebias just that channel.

Thanks!

Weren't the Stax amps "voiced" for National brand 6CG7/6FQ7 valves?

What something is voiced for is always a tricky subject but Stax always used the Toshiba tubes back in the day and they are by far the best I've heard in the T1 type amps.

Thanks Birgir.

Thanks for your help everyone. I’m going with a new Electro Harmonix 6CG7EH as that’s what was in it. I gather this should provide the intended tone and “voice” as you mentioned John and Spritzer.
