I would like to throw in the great jazz guitarist Stephane Grappelli. An old timer born in 1908. He recorded on a variety of labels.Try Atlantic recording corporation for a starter. I have an LP but I'm sure there are also some CD's out there.

Grappelli was a violinist. ;)  The guitarist you hear on the recordings is probably Django Reinhardt.

Thanks for the correction from Henry Flower. Not sure why I got that information wrong.Yes, Stephane Grappelli is a Jazz violinist. I found in my collection another LP of his: Stephane Grappelli Plays Jerome Kern.

How about Johnny A.

Lots of the greats were mentioned.

If you like Django here are a few more gypsy jazz guitarists: Angelo Debarre, Rosenberg Trio, Bireli Langrene

Another master jazz guitarist: Charlie Christian

But yes, Django Reinhardt is arguably the best guitarist of all time.

Curiously the best of the best always seem to have a traumatic accident to one of their hands. Two of Django's fingers were partially paralyzed from injuries suffered during a fire. And we all know the great Jerry Garcia lost his finger while he and his brother were chopping wood.

The guy I never hear anyone mention is John Scofield. He's been in a soul/jam-band thing of late that I'm not crazy about, but go back and check out something like What We Do…fine record…also luvvv him on saxist Joe Henderson's Miles Davis tribute So Near, So Far (Musings of Miles)

…and, of course, there's Bill Frisell, but you also have to find the right thing, like his discs with Paul Motian…On Broadway, Vol. 1, Monk In Motian or I Have The Room Above Her…he's also nice on Don Byron's Romance With The Unseen
