Amp for use with TV

Thread Starter

I have speakers built into the wall in my apartment, and my TV connected to them through the headphone port of the TV.

The TV does not output as much volume through the speakers as I would like, so I want to increase that. Could I use a headphone amp for this? If so, do you have any recommendation for one? I would want one that's pretty inexpensive.

Thanks

Does your TV have phono output like RCA?

Unfortunately no.

TV's wouldn't have a phono out (that is specific to analog recording formats such as records and requires more than simple amplification).

I would choose the headphone amp that has analog input (doesn't matter the type much) and has the features you want, namely battery or mains powered. TV's aren't known for good sound quality, no point in spending too much for an amp.

Looking at amazon, I can get the Pyle-Pro PHA40 for $20. Would that do the job?

Are you trying to "amplify" the speaker in wall with a headphone amp?

I don't think it's a good idea, not to mention you might improperly amplify your speakers causing it to clip or worse, causing damage.

The Pyle one you want is a bad choice as it only has TRS inputs/outputs.  But still if I read the first post right, you're trying to boost those in wall speakers?

Why not buy a receiver or preamp of some sort?

Yes, I'm trying to increase the volume of the wall speakers. I know they can handle louder audio than what the TV is currently playing, because they're also hooked up to a built in ipod dock which plays at a higher volume than the TV.

The reason I thought a headphone amp might work is that it's just connected to the TV through a normal 1/8" headphone connector.

Is the Pyle bad because the ports are for 1/4" plugs instead of 1/8", or are TRS inputs something else?

I'm not really sure how a receiver or preamp would help, checking that out now.

You would want a pre-amp, need something that will have enough gain to give you the levels you require, how much that is I can't be sure.

A headphone amp wouldn't be a good choice.

A preamp to get sound out of a TV headphone out??
For a start the in wall speakers have to be powered or you'll need power amps. Is it worth all this effort and money ?
Surely it is easier to just get a receiver or an integrated amp (they can be cheap), hook up the source to it and output that to the speakers.

I should have mentioned that there is already an amplifier hooked up with the speakers. It came with the apartment so I don't have any details on it, but it looks like this:

What TV model is it? Does it have an optical (toslink) output? Newer ones these days usually do. If it has a toslink output, you can send it to a used receiver. You can get a used Dolby receiver like a Yamaha for under $100 that will have a remote and sound good too. If your TV does not have this, maybe your cable box does.

For instance: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-RX-V430-325-watt-Receiver-/230679878877?pt=Receivers_Tuners&hash=item35b5979cdd#ht_500wt_1156  or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-RX-V595-Excellent-Condition-Great-audio-profile-/250902946640?pt=Receivers_Tuners&hash=item3a6afb2350#ht_500wt_1413

There you go, take that one off, buy an integrated amp, use the toslink out, then it's yours.

It'll probably cost you less than 100 if you buy used equipment and cables from monoprice.

The TV model is Hannspree ST42DMSB. It  does not have a toslink output. The cable box does have it, but there is also an xbox connected to the TV and I would prefer it if one solution worked for both.

Well, those used receivers I linked to have multiple optical inputs, switchable via the remote. Best solution for the money and sound quality IMO.
