Audeze has (DEFINITELY) something new Re: Headphones at Canjam? - Page 11

I just listen to the new lcd-3 today.  After talking to both alex and sankar the price seem to be around $1900.  That is almost double the price of lcd 2.  I hate to said this but the small improvement of lcd3 does not justify for the doubling the price.  I thought it would be more reasonable to be around 1.3k near 800 hd price.  Anybody interest lcd3 at that price?  Also another funny thing is how much lcd2 and 800hd was use as the showcase headphone for a lot of amp and dac exhibit.  I have both of them to so it was nice to know I make some good choices so far on dynamic headphone.

Really should have more impressions by now. The audeze table was packed all day. I'll try to get a listen tomorrow morning first thing.

Yeah, typical. 10%-20% better performance for 100% more $$! Welcome to high-end.

I actually think the difference in sound between the LCD-2 and LCD-3 is big. I have never been impressed with the LCD-2 unless you have a good cable and high power driving them. I listen to the LCD-3 with the Liquid Fire and I was impressed. IMO they are a lot more detailed and open without loosing the great base. They are also a lot more comfortable.

I was never interested to add the LCD-2 to my collection but these ones will have to joint it biggrin.gif. The only down side is the price... $1,945 but on the other hand compared to the Edition 10 these are a bargain comparing price/performance.

I was using a Meridian system before and it was quite interesting. You run your sources through their controller, which is basically a digital preamp, for source selection and volume control.  Those speakers were going for more than $7000 and make these Audeze look cheap.

No idea beyond my previous speculations ie fully active speakers with DSP (hence why I think there would be a digital input) and internal amplifiers. These speculations directly result from the official press release.

Las Vegas, NV —October 13, 2001—Audez’e (https://audeze.com/), the leader in planar magnetic speaker technology, today announces the introduction of Realty-1, a nearfield studio monitor designed for recording studios and other professional environments. Based on the same ground breaking planar magnetic driver technology that has given Audez’e’s LCD headphones near cult status among sound professionals and serious audiophiles, Reality-1 combines hyper-detailed response with the depth, accuracy and clarity of a state-of-the-art studio monitor.

Audez’e will be demonstrating Reality-1 for the first time at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, October 14-16 in Denver.
Reality-1 features Alpha Drive, a next generation planar magnetic transducer that is unlike anything else on the market, delivering an astonishing frequency response range of 150Hz to 30KHz in a single driver while eliminating crossovers and phase shifts in the midrange. The high performance planar driver is combined with two dynamic woofers that provide deep, tight bass at the low-end.
“The crossover point is at a very low 250Hz, resulting in amazing imaging and true-life reproduction of sound,” said Audez’e co-founder Sankar Thiagasamudram. “It is an ideal choice for sound mixing and desktop audio.”

Reality-1’s Alpha Drive planar magnetic driver is housed in an innovative enclosure designed to reproduce audio with unsurpassed integrity. The speaker includes two custom-built DSP and amplifier modules.

@musicman

Partially because the ED10s are awful.

After a short listen I have to agree with some other reviewers on the dimminshing returns with the LCD-3.  I honestly preferred the LCD-2 with the Woo WA5-le over the LCD-3 and Liquid Fire.  Which should not happen.  I will be hitting them up again tommorrow to see if my opinion still holds.

I hope my post isn't completely discounted as it clearly goes against the stream...as I think about it several hours later, even if the LCD-3 combo is better I would be hard pressed to justify the price difference.

Imo if you are holding a pair of LCD-2's right now I would not be so quick to trade up without having a chance to judge for yourself.

With all that being said, both of their headphones are clearly world class.

Hey Jose. Thanks for the impressions. Interested in the LCD-3 after hearing what you have to say.

I agree about the LCD-2s being a bit unimpressive (not as open or detailed as some other TOTL cans). I had the Rev. 2s with the Q-audio cable but ended up preferring the HE-6 (when powered by a high quality ballsy amp).

IMO, the LCD3 with the Cavalli Liquid Fire amp is the best sound at the Camfest. It beats the rest.

Thank you sharing the info I also have the LCD2 R1 re-cabled with WireWorld Platinum and that made a world of difference, also find it an excellent match with my Woo WA5. Cable upgrade cost was not cheap, but well worth it.

Enjoy music!

Try it on Ray's Darkstar. I intend to do so after I heard what his amp transformed the LCD2s into. Amazing.

It doesn't say anything about them being digital speakers. I guess we would have to wait to find out.

Thanks for the info.

The press release mentions Digital Signal Processing, which means that at some point in the Reality-1, it needs a digital signal. While it's possible they could chosse to only have an analog input followed by an ADC to then use the DSP, it would be strange is they didn't directly include a digital input that directly feeds the signal into the DSP.

...unless the botched their press release and everything written in it is inaccurate.

I see. I must have missed that part of the press release. In that case they must be digital speakers then.
