Questions about amping IEMs, any information would be GREAT

Hey Head-fi, I'm pretty new to high end quality audio so my questions may seem silly but I hope I can get some feedback from you guys.

My understanding is that most IEMs do not require an amp and have subtle improvements if any when amped. I do not own any headphones so I'm only curious to how amps can have an effect on IEMs. More specifically, I recently received a pair of JVC FX700 as a gift (what an AWESOME gift) and was wondering if an amp would bring even more out of the fx700? I also have a MD Tribute and Westone 3.

I have some extra cash to burn (~$100 USD) and thought that maybe I should try out some portable amps that could potentially improve the SQ even a bit. Suggestions?
I use an iPod with lossless files so I would need a LOD if I were to get a portable amp right? How important is the quality of the LOD? Will a high grade cable on those make a significant different in the sound?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

You would not expect such a small diaphragm or armature within an IEM to improve with amplification, but they often do.  I use my IEM's straight from my iPod so I am not sure how they would improve from my portable amp, but they sound nice out of my home rig.

Perhaps someone can chime in with a direct A/B comparison with some IEM's on an amp in that price range.
