Question about the 558s.   Are you supposed to turn the cable right or left to lock it properly?  Don't want to damage it just by switching cables occasionally

it turns right to lock and left to unlock

So my friend got the HD518, he liked the sound however he can`t wear it for more than 1 hour, he says the pressure on his head is too strong.
He has already done the "pillow technique" to try to make them more relaxed but the clamping force is still quite strong.
There`s any other things that can be done?

I've had that problem with my 558, but it has improved. The tops of the pads have deformed to better conform to my head. Also, I found that adjusting the cup rotation so that the top is furthest in before putting them on reduces the clamp. The part of the cup closest to the headband should be more inward so the cups are close to parallel when putting on the headphone.

Try extending the earcups down to a bigger size, that will improve the clamp and also the earcups will sit more center around the ear also improving soundstage (since i notice people tend to put the headphones on at too small a size, like my friend who has a bigger head than me by 2-3 sizes puts my pair on at a smaller setting, even Markiplier puts them on at almost the smallest size)

Extending the earcups will put more pressure on the ears from my experience, and reduce pressure on the top of the head.

I found that extending it made clamping a bit tighter (not by much though). I've actually slowly starting to extend it out and found it to be a lot more comfortable in general. I used to get really bad headaches but it has gotten way better now.

  Hi there,

Which wire would you guys recommend for using this with the 3.5mm jack? Or can I use the adapter supplied with the headphones?

Thanks

You can just use the adapter, though it's pretty bulky. The stock cable is also really long. I opted to get this:
http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412705505&sr=8-1&keywords=hd+558+upgrade+cable
Shorter cable and though my DAC/amp uses a 1/4" jack, I can always just as easily unscrew the adapter for the 3.5mm jack underneath. And it uses the same locking mechanism as the stock cable on the headphone end. I thought it was totally worth it; not really any difference in SQ that I could discern, but much better ergonomically.

Looks much better that the shorter optional cable Sennheiser sells.

Yeah, it's slightly pricier and comes from China, but the inside cable is red and has some nice black mesh sleeving on the outside which looks really good. I also like the jacks better; they look and feel nicer.

Slightly pricier?  After shipping looks to be pretty much same price I paid to have the shortcable shipped to me from sennheiser directly.  I don't know what they were thinking selling the headphones with that bulky cable.  Still comes in handy when I want to play some videogames but really annoying that i had to buy a cable to make the headphones usable. On a side note any good cables exist for the 558s that give remote functionality for android?  Or is that a pipe dream?

Same price? I didn't check the shipping from Sennheiser so I dunno if that was expensive or not. The cables with mics on Amazon only list compatibility with iOS devices, but this one on eBay looks like it might be made by the same people (based on the headphone side connector) and lists Samsung Galaxy devices, which makes me think that it should be compatible with any Android device. It's about the same price.

Momentum cables look like they might work, but don't take my word for it i have not tried it yet.
