Yeah i read about that, i didn't notice any changes, then again my ears aren't trained to catch minor changes.

BTW i just ordered the FiiO E10 :) I don't need anything portable because i mostly use these for gaming and computer.

I have a problem where the pads keep on attracting lint on them... Is it possible to switch the earpads to a leather material instead?

Just wanted to give a little shout-out to another amazing Sennheiser product!

But first, a little story:

Parents rolled over my D2000s with the computer chair and the frame is broken. There is a Wanted ad for a D2000 frame if anyone can help =P So having a little spare money, I went out and bought these 558s because I was curious. I'm a big fan of Sennheiser headphones (have the HD650s and the HD280 Pro), so naturally wanted to try these.

Sound-wise, these are Sennheiser signature we all know and love and not much to talk about here, the soundstage is amazing.

But holy smokes, Sennheiser has really outdone themselves again on the comfort level. I thought HD650 was pretty much perfect in terms of comfort before, but these headphones are just so much lighter and better supported. The black styling is pretty nice too, looks super sleek.

It looks like these will be coming with me to work and will be used when I don't need to block out external noise.

i won't really suggest that, it may adversely affect the sound (and there is no leather material replacement for them as far as i know)

Got a pair of 558s for my little brother as a christmas present. He seems to be extremely happy with them. First cans he ever owned that cost more than $30 biggrin.gif

Got used hd558 today listening around 5 hours continuously and I am stunned :) it blows out of water AKG K240 Studio, M30 and every other cans I have ever heard :)

Thanks Sennheiser so much !

I am worring cracking issue little bit, How can I check by serial number (or something) if it is made updated plastic or old one?

My serial number is 05100013**

chances of it being the cracked one is very low, also if you tap the small sennheiser logo area at the side and it feels like it has a little rubber in it then it probably is the newer one, if it feels like harder plastic then is probably the old one, not sure how to check the serial number though

under two screw right? yes it has small rubber like button where cups and headband touches. Also it feels not to cheaply built, I have not seen earlier versions...  but headband feels to be very solid

Thanks for reply

well i didnt mean the rubber button lol, i meant the feeling of the material where the tiny sennheiser logo is printed. but i believe the one you have is the newer one (the old ones have almost completely vanished)
i have my own pair and tested the shop's demo HD598 (old one) and it is cracked, i felt the material and it feels a lot more plasticy and brittle than the more rubber feel of my own pair of HD558.

Right now I want to move " up" from my little hd238s. I like  open phones and either the hd518 or 558 are in my range (not the 598 however). I've seen some reviews that say the 518 is more "musical" than the 558. I mainly listen to classical, jazz and classic rock. I will use my FiioE7 with these initially. Does anyone have recommendations?

the HD518 is bassier and thicker sounding and but *not as refined and as wide of a soundstage as the HD558, also the HD518 has no modding options while the HD558 has the foam mod option. the valour on the HD558 is a lot nicer and softer too.

*typo, sorry bout that
