I saw that too, but when I went they were $250. Only later did I see the lower online "in-store" price... I'm going back to check this weekend hopefully (after I call to check.)

@daniel0407

How would you compare the 558 and 598?  Is your 558 stock?  Is 598 good for movies/games?

Thanks

I can't compare them, but I can say that both would be good with movies and games because of the large sound stage.

598 sounds slightly better, bit more treble. Mine is stock and I have demo'd a 598 at a nearby store. Both would be great for gaming.

I have a lot of budget headphones. The HD 558 is definitely a step up from all of them

I like the HD 558 for its rich warm smooth sound with wide sound stage and good clarity and comfort. I recommend them at its $128 price point without the slightest hesitation.

the HD 598 to my ears sounds a little sharper and clearer with tighter bass and more of a treble tilt, but no sibilance. I love both headphones equally.

I can't say the HD558's have a wide soundstage after listening to my Q701's. Haha. Don't listen to me though.

Has anyone here tried the hd518 using the 558/598/555/595 pads yet?

post #580 of 791

Oh my! 595 pads on the 518...AWESOME!

Q701 has an even wider stage I am told

It does but I don't want my comment to stop that guy from buying the 558's. They are a great headphone. I love them and my Q701's equally. :k701smile:

Anyone know a cheap cable that I can buy to make my HD558 into a headset using the Vmoda Boompro Mic?

If you take the 558's apart and remove the little plastic nub that interlocks with the stock connector you can just use a basic slim 2.5mm to 3.5m adaptor such as this. An alternative to this method would be to dremel a slot into the adapter to mimic the stock connector, I tried this myself and wasn't able to get it to work but it should be possible.
