Once they click on the link and see the $200 price, the game is over. I've been through a similar situation once. I guess that it doesn't hurt trying.

My local Best Buy / Magnolia does not carry the HD 598 in store, otherwise I would try to price match.  No biggie, it was just that $149.99 is such a good deal.  For $10 more what I paid for my HD 558, I could have the 598 and I am still in my return window.  I will try calling Fry's.com in the morning and see if I can place an order online at the $149.99 in store price.

I personally wouldnt trade my 558 for a 598 - even if it was even money.

Simple Fellas!!!

Great advice. I didn't even drive to a local Best Buy. I simply called them, and placed the order over the phone. $159.99 after tax and shipped to my door. I have to wait for them to be shipped to me, but it would have been the same if Amazon matched the price. Mine didn't have them in store either.

It's worth a try everyone. I don't know much about how the pricing on these fluctuate, but it seems like a good deal to me.

FYI I ordered the replacement cable for the HD 598 & I just wanted to let everyone know my ordering experience.

I realized about 2 seconds after I completed the order that I has ordered the wrong length. I emailed the seller & being as they are in China wasn't confident that I would get a timely response. Well, it took 2 minutes & the seller responded & said he would adjust the order & charges, no problem. The email was very cordial & gave me a very good feeling about doing business with them. It is often the case, when ordering from China, that I just cross my fingers & hope the order is fulfilled & the product is good. Although I can't review the cable yet, It was a refreshing experience ordering it. Maybe we can get a review from the gentleman that first posted here regarding these cables.

Cheers,

kev

Are the connectors sealed, or can they be opened up?

They are either sealed or on so tight I can't get them apart (just tried). They are quite nice, as is the cable. Until you asked about it, I wasn't tempted to get them open. smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks, I am curious to know if most of these that appear permanently sealed can be opened. I think I have a 1/4" plug that's metal, but doesn't seem to unscrew. I think I will get some tools on it & see if I can get it opened. BTW How long did it take to get your cable?

Edit: I checked out another 1/8" connector that I had & it was full of silicone. I used a soldering iron to heat the barrel & it came apart pretty easily. Had the iron set a tad over 800 F. Probably don't need it that hot, but my thinking was to melt the silicone quickly to protect the plastic parts inside. Once I pulled the guts out, I used tweezers to extract the rest of the silicone. Not sure how easy it will be to use again with those in-line solder pads & securing it till the silicone sets.

Cheers,

kev

I ordered a replacement cable that is shorter and terminated in a 1/8 inch rather than the stock cable with 1/4 inch plug and huge adapter. I got it from Sennheiser. It cost $12.95 then add on shipping ($6.50) and of course taxes. It arrived in 2 or 3 days. More convenient and easier to handle than what came in the box. The huge adapter had me worrying about damaging my cellphone.

I guess the HD 598 is discontinued huh? They don't appear on Sennheiser site. 558 are there though. Guess that's why the 598 are being discounted here & there. I am new to the 598 & I enjoy them immensely. Glad I was able to pick up a pair at such a good price. Life is good!
