That's a DAC/Amp. If you're going to use it with a smartphone, better check the compatibility with what you have. If you don't intend to get the DAC, look at the FiiO E12 Amp.

2.  Has anyone removed (mod) the tapes and removed the outer screens that cover the grills?  How does it sound?  My main goal is to make the headphone cooler without screwing up the sound.

Yes it does loosen up over time. The 558's uncomfortable.. what?

You can always put the tape back by the way.

1. That's right, 558 and 595 are not comfortable for me.  On the other hand, Bose full-size headphones felt really comfortable.

2. The outer screen removal might be a one way street though.

Do you have any headphones that you feel are comfortable for you?

Also the removal of them (the silver ring as well) will increase the soundstage airyness at the cost of bass.

I was looking at FiiO E11, E07K, E17.

E11 - Amp only.

E07K - Amp, USB DAC (makes your pc, laptop sound much better through headphones).

E17 - Amp, USB DAC, Toslink.

From what I've heard, my Cyanogen S3 should work with it.

I'd like to get one with a USB DAC, as the 3.5 mm jack on my laptop broke a while ago. The e07k is a better price and, as I have no idea what to expect, cheaper is better.

Use them. I just got back my pair from the Sennheiser Repair center and they sent me a whole brand new one in packaging and all. I didn't even send my 3.5mm jack back, and they still gave me a whole new one. They are actually not that comfortable out of the box.

I found the over tightness to last only a few hours. Since then, wonderfully comfortable.

I did not look back far enough on this thread before.  After search through a different thread and got a link to the page 11 of this thread and got many answers I was looking for from that page on.

-----

Now, I am tempted to do the mod because:

Stock 558 has more bass than I would like and have to dial back on the bass with eq when listening to music (many instrumental).

But I wonder if a mod 558 still has enough booomm for movies and games.

-----

I was torn between 558 and 598 but I settled on the 558 because I did not like the color of 598 and the general consensus was that the 598 was light on bass.  It turned out that the 558 is a bit bassy for me when listening to music.

The 558's arrived yesterday, and oh man do these sound great!

(Excuse the lack of quality, photo was taken with my phone.)

This is the tip of the iceberg as you are now on the road to perdition. :veryevil: P.S. foodstamps don't cover headphones, amps, DACs, etc:D

After listening to these, I can safely say I've been bitten by the bug.

Hey guys. I got these (558) during the holidays, I was wondering how durable the speaker mesh that covers the outside is?

I'm generally pretty careful with them, but it got me thinking when I quickly took them off and accidentally ran my fingernail across it.
