Westone 3 - absolutely.

According to the Westone w40 thread, the W40 has more bass than the Westone 4 with the same clarity as the 4 has. Was wondering if anyone has used the W40 who are bass heads. I have heard that the Westone 3 were good for bass heads.

W3 were not bad for a basshead, but for my tastes too much midbass.

I had a "manic" month of February. I must have tried 200 headphones and amped almost all but a handful including the $5,000.00 pair.

A few things I learned.

1. A headphones signature without an amp is very very different than with. I would recommend a person by a headphone amp before looking for any cans over 100 bucks. You can either buy cans then an amp or an amp and test your cans then buy. I'd do the amp first if i could do it again.

2. Most bass tuned cans like Beats,Streets,Souls,Wangs etc have very little headroom to push them more. They already set it up for you. Your not gonna get much more before distortion.

3. Studio "audiophile" cans are studio cans. You're not gonna get too much via an eq and boosting. They made wine for you. Why would you try and turn it back into grapes? That must be what makes an audiophile cringe...when some dude like me says "I can't bass these up for ****...wtf?"  My Akai laugh at my boosts. They don't really do much but give me +4 db in a given range  despite my throwing 3 times that at it.  Anyone thinking the new M-Audio are gonna be Q40 with a 50mm driver are mistaken. They say "High Definition" on the cups for a reason that's not bassy HD...it's a studio spectrum. Flat. They are gorgeous and feel like art. If I wanna hear the studio ...all the instruments and vocals the way they were mastered in the studio they are my monitors. I love em. But they don't listen to me. Turning wine back into grapes...they will not do that....and they shouldn't.

4. I have an affinity for Denon and JVC.

Ultrasones, Senns, AKG and the like have a certain sound. I prefer Denon for a high end can and nothing else.  JVC is dark but they have just impressed the **** out of me. I had a prejudice AGAINST J.V.C based on car audio. I overcame a bias and fell in love. That's a trip. The 77's blew my mind. The sz2000 blew my ears and mind. They totally screwed up with that series but it was a bass lab in a steel cup. I'm...a kid in a sand box with those.

My top 3.

1. JVC sz2000

Imagine being totally lost in a forest and turning a corner and your back at your front steps...home.....everything is gonna be alright.

These did that for me

2. JVC 77x

Started my manic hunt. Actually the 55x did I learned a lot that day when I first heard the 55x. The 77's  ....only eclipsed by the bass lab in a cup made by their company then abandoned.

3.***Reserved for a Denon***

Hard to be apples to apples here for the following reason - when I had my D5000, it had aftermarket wood cups (good) but no Lawton damping at all (bad).  My D7000 save for the first four days of ownership have had full Lawton mods on driver and cups.  That said, they were close.  I'd go out on a limb and say with the same Lawton damping it would be too close to call to my 52 year old ears.  Mainly say that as an educated guess since my D2000's have full Lawton treatment and are dang close to the D7000.  Not fully there but close.  And after all, it's the Denon signature I love so all three DX000 series are awesome, as well as the D600 to me.

In terms of clarity only:

1. Beyer DT880

2. AKG K701 (sold)

3. Sony Ma900

In terms of BASS:

1. M-Audio Q40

2. JVC HA-S500 (before getting burned in, they had much more bass)

3. Beyer DT770

Thanks. I can't wait to see if I'm a basshead

I could be pursuaded to sell my Yamaha HPH200 for $50AUD but I'm in Sydney Australia so shipping might be a bummer

La Figaro 339:

Palaios Iana + Digizoid ZO combination:

And the trusty Fiio E17, with it's very powerful and very specific bass EQ abilities.

Can the JVC SZ2000 be driven by either: Emotiva Mini-X or AudioGd 15.32? I've got the JVCs on order and need to know if I have to purchase another amp

Just got my Ultrasone Signature DJ in the post with my NFB 15.32. Cracked out Cydonia in fear of a red planet. WOW! is the reaction, foot stomping good bass. Incredible clarity through the synths and psy trance effects as well. Colombian Necktie Remix was ******* insane. Really good imaging. Soundstage isn't crash hot though, but I'm coming from KEF X300A for my rock/metal listening.

Next week I'll receive the TH600 and see who stays or goes. Comparison coming soon.

That one amp should be fine. That audio gd 15.32 is pretty powerful... Didn't look up that mini x tho. That gd 15.32 should give you quite the bass massage... I don't have an sz2000 tho, but looking at specs... Yeah.

I only have an e12 and the low boost switch is sweet.

Another guy who got them recently liked them better with new pads, Hifi and Beyer. I think he liked the beyer pads. He and I are both considering alpha pads. Actually I'm getting them and he might. I actually have no issue with the over ear cups that let the driver sit on the ear. I think it's part of their design? Hard to believe they put so much work in the cups and materials and then said whatever with the pads but....coulda happened? If the Alpha pads take away from the bass then I'll just switch back. I think the design was related to the swivel

The cups rotate forward and back. I am constantly playing with that (you can see cup on the left slightly pivoted to the front) I think most cans look insane with alpha pads so I want the insane look and if all goes well it does nothing to the bass and enhances something.

You will surely see if your a basshead. As the 2 guys who ran these including glocks and I agree they are bass monsters. gelocks noted they are dark and AC/DC and guitars do not sound good out the box. I don't listen to AC/DC for a while.....I wore out my Back in Black CD along with Metallica's Garage days re re visited the $5.98 EP...but I want bass with hp's ....a big bang.

The e12 is the only amp I really know.

That sz2000 has a max input of 3500 mW, so you can put about as much power in as ya want.
