How do you guys find the bass boost function on the E17 compared to the ZO2?

It's kind of hard to compare.  The SmartVektor technology of the ZO2 adds a v-shaped signature, not only are the bass notes boosted but also the treble.  It's been a while since I owned the ZO2 and I only spent a short time demo'ing the E17 but I think I liked the ZO2 better.

There were several things I didn't like about the ZO2, but I'm really looking forward to the upcoming ZO3.

This worries me a little. It is possible to switch it off (or to leave the highs "as is")?

It's not a traditional bass boost so you can't "turn off" the change in the treble.

The highs aren't effected nearly as much as the lows.  I never found it harsh or piercing, but if you you're using Beyers or Grados you probably don't want the ZO2 if you're solely looking for bass boost.

The ZO2.3 is tiny bit V-shape sounding, agree on that, the mids feel slightly recessed at times why I like the ZO2.1 more which is more midrange forward but sounds like it very gently rolls off the treble instead but the mids are oooh so thicker/in-your-face compared to ZO2.3. Let's hope ZO3 will be best of both worlds. :)

This is an image that the manufacturer provides for the Z02.3.

It's a shame that it has an effect on the mids and highs as well, as they apparently don't seem to advertise that fact.

I guess I'll stick to the "Bass boost" function of my E17.

Note that the effect on the treble is subtle but I did notice it, as did others on Head-Fi.

The Arrow amp has the best implementation of bass boost of any portable amp I have tried, I definitely regret selling that amp.  I also own the JDS Labs C421 which is descent.  From what I hear the new JDS Labs C5/C5D is very good as well.  I the C5D has as 2-stage boost for better customization.

The zo and fiio are completely different information terms of the bass they provide. The fiio will simply add more punch/impact. The zo will ad punch/impact, a lot of weight/body to the entire sound spectrum, and massive rumble.

Oh nice, one issue I had with my C5 was it had to MUCH bass boost! I really wanted a 2 stage implimentation. Glad to see John slapped that in his new C5 :D

Comparing FiiO E-11, C&C BK, ZO, C421 and Arrow 3G, agree the Arrow 3G does bass the best and it's two stage as well. By far it is my favorite portable.

Hmm... The Fiio has the ability to step up (or down) bass by FIVE steps in either direction.. Ten in total. It's a lot more than a bass boost switch.

The C421 (2227 edition) is still my favourite portable amp.

The reason I was asking about the Digizoid, is that I recently acquired a hybrid IEM, which doesn't output a lot of bass alone. But, with EQ, that dynamic driver can really drive HARD.

I'm more than satisfied with the mids and highs on this IEM as-is, so maybe the Z02 isn't for me then...

....But I'm still so tempted.

I have a good feeling about ZO3... they try to aim to have a small stock available for xmas. According the devs it's a much upgraded ZO2.3 in terms of amping and it has "no hiss" now too according to them and it also has treble adjustment.

Yeah, the initial specs on the ZO3 have been sounding very good.  Like I mentioned before, I'm really interested in hearing impressions from the ZO3 as soon as it hits the streets.  No ETA as of yet, so you may have to suffer with your C421 like me.

MizMoxie has said that she's going to blog about the device on their site as it becomes a physical reality.  You can also sign up for e-mail updates from DigiZoid here:

Thanks for the info!

C421 brothers for life.
