The Basshead Club - Page 370

Alright. I'm back and am unpacking them. They appear to be brand new and never opened (Yay B&H). These are very nice looking (better than the pics by far) and they are lighter in weight than I expected. MUCH lighter than my HE500s. They look much less stupid on my head than my HE500s too. HE500s look a bit like ------> o2smile.gif on me. biggrin.gif

Anyway the next step is to hook them up and give 'em a listen. I'm SO NERVOUS!!!!!  I'll report back later when they've had some music running through them for a few hours. Wish me luck... tongue.gif

I don't want to keep you guys in suspense any longer than necessary, and I'm sure Craig is probably wondering... Initial impressions are these are absolutely fantastic. They are giving my HE500s a run for their money and no other Headphone has ever come close to doing that. tongue_smile.gif

I'll go into more detail later, but so far I'm just delighted. Big fat thanks to Craig right off the top. It appears you were not only right, but perhaps even undersold it a bit, lol. Thanks.

I'm going back to listening!

great to hear

how do they compare to the D7000 [if u heard] I'm hearing more good about it :O [more good as in I keep hearing postitives, vs hearing not much bout dese <3]

I've never heard a Denon before. I was looking hard at the D7100 but they are getting horrible reviews so far so I passed. You know that the D5000 and 7000 are discontinued right? You won't be able to get one except for a used one. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that I see people recommending Denons to people all the time and they never mention that they are discontinued and are out of production. Denon no longer has a contract with Fostex to produce their headphones so it's a done deal forever.

Hey, can't wait to hear your thoughts on them.

I think what you're referring to is equalization. I don't really use it, but the people who do say that the best way to improve the bass is to turn down the other frequencies, rather than turn down the bass.

One thing I've noticed right away is how nice the imaging is with these. They sound like an open can. The instruments and in particular the vocals are positioned perfectly in my head. Makes the HE500s sound positively distant in comparison. I've been so focused on the mids and highs (that was my biggest worry) that I never mentioned the Bass! It's just what you'd expect from Ultrasone. Big, deep, tight, and punchy.

The best Bass texture I've ever heard in a headphone comes from my HE500s. These are not that far behind. You can hear all the layers and textures, and THAT is not something you can say for too many headphones. It's one of my holy grails for Bass and this one does it better than any "Basshead" Can I've ever had, and I've had a few... If you (like me) are thinking this is anything like the Pro 900, I can tell you it's not. They are so different, if not for the Bass, you could think it was from a different company. Even the form factor is very different. The 900s are a lot heavier for one thing and while the Bass is similar, I wouldn't say it's exactly the same. These seem to extend down a little further and have a bit more Sub Bass in comparison. Mids and highs on these are very refined. Detailed without being harsh and nary a trace of sibilance. I'm actually surprised by how good the mids and highs sound, and I think they got the balance just right straight from the Factory. I have not felt the need to EQ these at all. The Tonal balance is, as far as I'm concerned, perfect. They nailed it. Which is nice, because I prefer not to use EQ if at all possible. .

Anyway, it's still early, but so far they sound great and Im happier and more relieved by the hour. It will be worth a thousand bucks just to finally be happy. These are better than I dared hope to be honest. It's been a long search with a lot of disappointments along the way. I was preparing myself to not be "thrilled", but so far they are surpassing my expectations. Really looking forward to giving them a thorough test.

I so desperately need this comparison: D7000 vs Signature DJ off an iPhone 4S.

Great ears hear alike.  I am relieved you are enjoying them as much as I do and hearing the same attributes after my glowing and apparently persuasive comments about the Sig DJ.  Ultrasone should probably have named this the Signature Ultimate because I believe it is the best sounding Ultrasone ever made and arguably the best sounding portable headphone ever made with bassheads in mind.

You know what else I'm noticing with these? The S-Logic is much more subtle on these versus my Pro 900s. If you turned the Pro 900s backwards they were almost unlistenable, these don't change that much. I've noticed the position they sit on my head isn't as critical either. I keep forgetting it has that unusual speaker array. Which is how it should be I suppose.

I ordered the 10 foot straight cable  from Ultrasone for a hundred bucks, so that' should tell you how sure I am that I will be keeping them. These aren't going anywhere ever.  Thanks again for pushing me a little, in my mind these are worth every penny.

Bareyb, which amp are you driving these with?

Hearing all these posts are getting me excited about my audition time with these cans (sig DJ) tomorrow with the sig pro. How do these sound straight out of an iPhone 4S and does an amp improve them by a lot?

Sensitivity/volume and amp benefit are on par with other 32ohm headphones.  They can be adequately driven through the Iphone.
