I'd say that's a fair characterization. I love my HE500s but they aren't really what I'd call a true Basshead 'phone. Not in the sense that we have been talking about them here, with the top five list etc. I tend to EQ mine up a bit on the bottom end and they EQ amazingly well. You can get a lot of Bass out of them cleanly and it's very well defined Bass at that. However... If you are looking for pure sound pressure and sonic WALLS of Bass like you get from Q40s and Pro 900s they don't have it.
They have really great quality Bass that extends deep and is very layered, but it won't blow your hair back like a true Basshead 'phone can.. Of course a conventional Dynamic Basshead 'phone won't give you the amazing Mids and Highs that an Ortho can either, so it's kind of a trade-off. I think it's good to have both... HE500s for refined Bass and a good quality Basshead 'phone for when you want to party down.
