Yea when it comes to basshead headphones, you should keep an eye especially in the 100 - $400 range, there exists some exceptions like for example Ultrasone Signature DJs which are like ~$700 and probably would satisfy you but it doesn't sound like the primary option to go for in your case. :P
Headphones to concider:
- Yamaha PRO 500
- M-Audio Q40 (quite cheap but does great delivering gobs of bass and still sounding pretty good, at least price/bass quantity wise it does exceptionally well there. Not THAT portable though IMO and clamps fairly hard which disturbs a lot of people but I personally had no issues with it)
- Audio Technica's new flagship Solid Bass Series ATH-WS99 (great option but unfortunately not detachable cable and comfort isn't excellent but not too bad either, sound wise it would be a good fit though based on Dsnuts extensive description of them. Only seems to be available in Asia so far though but there is for example Accessoryjack selling them at very fair price)
- Ultrasone HFI 580 (not quite as bassy (subbass especially) as M100 but plenty of "punchy" midbass, it's more aggressive sounding (more forward/in-your-face treble) than M100
- UE6000 (may be slightly on the dark side for you taste, it has more veiled highs than M100)
- PRO700MK2, might be too "dark" sounding possibly, the highs are quite withdrawn, comfort with the stock pads not the best, more likely to sit a bit on your ears a little unless your ears are small
Finding similar alternatives is hard in this business, you have to usually compromise here and there.
