The name for it is Spitfire, so I'm guessing that its likely a microphone or an oddly designed single driver speaker.

I was hoping for a speaker but I think its a microphone.

Only a microphone would need that kind of mount...

 

Can't say I've heard of an orthodynamic microphone before, though. They're usually all condenser (electrostatic or electret) or dynamic microphones. (But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, since those other driver principles can be used to input sound as well as output it...)

That's very interesting.

 

 

I take it they're using the exact some acoustic properties of input/output in their products thus creating a time-space channel between this microphone and the LCD-2?

I've noticed the same thing. I'm basically in this forum for the Stax discussions, most of which are concentrated in a giant, 1,000+ page thread, and not necessarily the flagship Omega-series setups I can't hope to afford.

 

Perhaps there should be dedicated electrostatic and orthodynamic forums for that middle ground between the general Headphones (full-size) forum (where people like to keep it cheap) and this one?
