UM1 wire repair help

My pair of westone UM1s which is quite a bit past warranty has started having wire problems and the left monitor has stopped working. I've never soldered wires before but I get the gist of it and I've researched how to go about it. The problem I'm having is that none of the three wires are color coded as far as I can tell; they all just have similar black plastic casing.

If nothing else I thought I could always just label them myself somehow and try different combinations, kind of like a game of mastermind, but that sounds like a lot of work.

SO, if anybody has any useful tips on how to differentiate the three wires that would be so so great. thank you all

If you can get your hands on a multimeter it would be easy.  Just check continuity.

For the plug: Tip - Ring - Sleeve = Left - Right - Ground.

Touch the tip and find out which wire that connects to with your multimeter.  Continue as previous for right and ground.

Ok but how would I test the plug and one end of the wire since one end of the wire is in the earbud and one end of the wire will be bare wire when I'm putting a new plug on?

It's best to mark each wire in two spots, then cut between the spots, then identify each wire. Once that is done you know which wire is which.

If you already cut the wire, measure resistance between the wires, between two of the wires you will get double the rated impedance, between the other two connections you will measure the rated impedance, when you get double the impedance you know that you have both the left and right channels positive connections connected, the common ground is the unconnected cable.

To pick left vs right use alligator clips to rig up a plug to a source, ground to sleeve, right to ring, left to tip.
