Hello there!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to say hi and give a formal introduction. I'm currently a senior in college and fairly new to the world of hi-fi. After a lot of lurking, I've finally decided to invest in some audio equipment and signup to head-fi.

I currently own the following...

Sennheiser HD 555
Sennheiser HD 595 (currently broken, sending in for repairs sometime soon)

Little Dot MK II (should arrive sometime next week)

Fiio D3 DAC

Swans M10 Speakers

So I guess to spark some discussion, what was your first experience with "hi-fi" equipment, what made you take the plunge into high end audio?

I live next to headroom so when they had their show room I would wonder in and compare walls of headphones through their Headroom Max amp which they no longer produce.  This is where my musical tastes started to change due to the gear I was interested in.

I think back then I went from EH-250 to 350 to HD-555 to HD-650 then to a pair of Denon AH-D2000's.  These were my best set until I needed an open pair so I went AKG K701, Q701, and settled on the DT990.  I have listened to the HD-800's and T1's through my m903 and just do not care for their sound.  HD-800 is way to recessed to be enjoyable and the T1 was much the same.  I did like the LCD-2, but the fit was not right and I felt that the Rev 1's lacked treble.  Now I hear the Rev 2's have too much.  I like wearing a headphone not a head speaker.  They are two difference experiences and should be as such.  If I want the sound of speakers I listen to my Wharfedale Diamond 10.2's or my Polk Audio 5A's.  It has been an expensive journey but well worth it.  I am constantly amazed how well my DT990's ( 250 Ohm ) sound through the m903.

I spend all of my time listening to music for fun and not analyzing it.  I prefer the m903 because it is not as bass emphasized as other amps in its price range and can feed powered monitor speakers.

Musically I went from groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cake to more detailed and sophisticated groups like Slaid Cleaves, Ali Farka Toure, and Bonobo.

Having a better appreciation for crisp, clean, and well recorded audio made me enjoy movies with said music even more.

If you are looking to spoil your listening experience try a pair of good in-ear monitors.  They really spoil most headphones.  For me I went from ER-6i's which at the time I ended up not liking, but have a huge respect for now, to a pair of Brainwavz M2's.  I then moved to Monster TurbinePro Copper and really enjoy them with some Comply tips.

To this day I look for the best sound for the least amount of money.  I hardly assume a more expensive headphone, or anything for that matter, makes it automatically better.  I leave that to the sales people.  I just want to be able to sit back, relax, and truly enjoy every track on my playlist.  I hope you all can do the same.
