Audio-Technica ATH-M50 detachable cable mod

Thread Starter

Hey guys, I got my AT ATH-M50 headphones the other day, and decided to create a detachable cable for it. I went out and bought a 1/8" female stereo jack, and a 6 ft. male-to-male cable to connect it from the jack to my iPod.

It was rough, but I managed to get everything soldered and put into place. I screwed everything back in and tested it, and it seems to work fine! Which is great. However, I was wondering if it could be possible that even though I can hear it clearly through both headphones, that I could have messed something up? I'm asking this because I'm not sure if I'm just not used to the headphones yet (I only used them for like an hour total before deassembling them for the mod), but I can't tell if it sounds a little bit strange or not.

If they're playing fine does that mean it's fine? Or is it possible to play with something messed up. There's no crackles or anything. Here's a picture of the outside (won't help, but you can look at it at least).

I would guess your fine, but how did you attempt this and what would I need to buy? I just ordered mine and really want to do this! Thanks.

Congrats. Play your favorite tune through some software or hardware that allows you to adjust balance (L/R), surround sound and has filters (hi/lo/bandpass) and see how it sounds to you. If it sounds good to you then that's all that matters.
