Home Audio Speakers "Popping"

I have a pair of old speaker towers (at least 15 years old and are about 3 feet tall) at home that my parents use for watching movies. I don't know the specs of them but whenever they turn it on, it makes a LOUD popping sound every 3-10 seconds...which probably isn't a good thing.

They're hooked up to a record player right now, but when my brother tried to use it with his iPod Touch, it also made the popping sounds.

I personally don't know too much about speakers, but I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions or comments.

Thanks in advanced for any help you can provide!

My initial guess is that the wires are not fully connected and the speakers wires need to be trimmed on each end and then reinserted.

Perhaps try the speakers on a different receiver to make sure it is not the input.  The phono input may be ok, but the aux may be damaged for example.

Although it is possible that your speakers are actually damaged check the link below for a few other causes that can easily be found and fixed prior to replacing the speakers.

Is this only happening while playing them loudly?

No, it happens at any volume level.

After adjusting the wires a little, the popping sound went away [for now], but should it come back again later I mightl try another option.

If your speakers and amp will accept bannana plugs, then use speaker wire terminated with bannana plugs you will get a better connection that way.
