Optimal B22 gain setting for LCD-2 and Grado?

Okay, so I cannot decide what gain is best for my B22.  Will 8x gain provide low noise floor for Grado's yet provide enough power for the LCD-2?

I have no problem with gain 2x for the B22+LCD2.

Same here, I also ran mine at 2x (4x in balanced) and it's just lovely.

Mine will be a 3 board setup for active ground.  I assume a 5x gain for a 3 board is about the same as a 2x gain balance setup since balance doubles gain?

Yep.

It worked great even when I wasn't using a balanced source, so it only ran at 2x.

5x should be just fine, as you'd never know what power hungry headphones you might acquire in the future. 8x is pushing it too much IMO, unless you enjoy only having a few degrees of movement in the volume knob. tongue.gif

It also depends on your source's output voltage, but I wouldn't make a big deal over picking the right gain as you can always change it up later if needed.

Okay thanks, ordering parts for 5 gain.

why dont you order parts for a couple of gain settings and socket the input voltage feedback r's until you decide on the proper setting to suit?

Because you also have to change the compensation capacitors..

ahh doh, i just typed in, wouldnt that depend on the opamp? haha, i was thinking m3 for some reason. could you socket both? not really ideal for a compensation cap though since its inductance might screw things up. just as a temporary thing is all i'm saying, just to work out what is suitable

I'll do more reading on socketing, not sure if it is possible with the board though.  What I am interested in doing is adding the meier crossfeed option, and separate volume control for left and right channels.

It's not recommended to socket those parts as it may cause instability.

ahh so it is borderline, thus my comments on inductance.

x5 should be fine. I had mine set to a balanced gain of x4 while using a 2V source and it was just a touch too little (only with quieter tracks).
