Also, just realized that several of their albums are on DVD-A. I'll have to grab those.
And I'll stay hopeful that a reunion tour will show up sooner or later. I never saw them live and wish I had.

Well, I dug New Adventures in Hi-Fi, but the last record I could get genuinely excited about was the loud one, Monster…sounded like they had something to prove, which they did.
Ahhh REM..... "Losing My Religion" convinced me to pick up the mandolin last year. o.o

Agree - I have 8 of their albums from 1991-2008. I see some of their albums slowly getting released on HD-tracks in 24/96 if anyone interested. So far they have "Out Of Time", "Reveal" and "Monster" - hopefully they will get the full repertoire there at some stage.
This is how I'd rank the catalog (5 Stars = best, 0 Stars = worst:
Essentials:
1) Murmur - 5 stars
2) Fables of the Reconstruction - 5 stars
3) Automatic For the People - 5 stars
4) Reckoning - 5 stars
5) New Adventures In Hi-Fi - 4.5 stars
6) Lifes Rich Pageant - 4.5 stars
7) Document - 4.5 stars
8) Monster - 4 stars
9) Green - 4 stars
10) Out of Time - 4 stars
Non-essentials
11) Collapse Into Now - 3.5 stars
12) Accelerate - 3.5 stars
13) Up - 2.5 stars
14) Reveal - 2.5 stars
15) Around the Sun - 1 star
Dead Letter office is a must get as well, as most versions contain the first EP "Chronic Town". It's worth the price for those songs alone. Dead Letter Office is a collection of unreleased tracks from the IRS years. (First 5 albums) It contains its share of big hits and big misses, so it's hard to rank. Maybe the greatest album title ever for a B-Side collection...lol
The thing about R.E.M. - especially, Michael Stipe, he had quite a presence in helping new, up and coming artists, too. He saw Vic Chesnutt performing in a club and saw potential. He aided him in connected with record companies to further his career. The late Vic Chesnutt story is actually quite amazing if you listen to any of his music or know of him.
Regardless of whether you liked R.E.M.'s music or not, they were talented.
They should have called it a day 15 years ago or so, after Hi-Fi, but yeah, everything up to that point is still in heavy rotation over here. Fables is one of my top 10 albums. Great band; will be missed.
From a purist point of view, breaking up after "Hi-Fi" would have been the way to go. Go out on top. This is a pretty good article arguing why it's best they kept going:
Ha! Nice.
I wonder if, in the spotlight of this event, they're losing their religion and trying to keep their point of view. Oh no, i've said too much!
Athens, GA is a unique creative environment and I have no doubt it will serve as the renaissance point for R.E.M. in the future.
They are not done.
With that said, Nightswimming.
