Is there any certain kind of amp/dac i need to get to use with an iPod? (or any idevice for that matter). What about with a cowon mp3 player?

You don't need one, I have one and I hardly use it to be honest.

I used to use an amp with a portable player during the PCDP days. But using one with a DAP defeats the portability of such a device, IMHO - even more so than using ginormous headphones with a DAP.

Need? No. Although there can be some benefits. I can use my Senn HD-650's with my iPod Touch because I do have an amp. The Sennsheisers are 300 ohms and need more power than an iPod can provide. On the other hand, when I want to be portable, I use the iPod alone, with just earbuds. I use the Yuin PK-1's which are fantastic buds. (although since those are 150 ohms, they also are much better amped, though it is not totally necessary)

To be honest, when I'm portable, such as when I'm walking, or in the car, train, etc, I am not so focused as to really hear the difference in SQ anyway. But when I am sitting down, focusing on the music, the amp and good phones make a big difference, and it is nice to have it there when I want it. And yes, the LOD into an amp is the preferred configuration for iPods.

Cowon's have a bit more output power, but still can benefit from amps, depending on your phones. How do you normally listen? Do you listen on the go? Do you ever just sit and focus on the music? My point is, make your choices based on your individual needs, and you'll be happy.
