Thunderpants (T50RP mod) Group Buy - Page 11

Cool, no problems with me. If the list can be updated with these options I'll see what I can track down.

Hi Gary.  Although I knew about the Thunderpants from the comments on Head-Fi I hadn't realised just how good they were.  Tyll's measurements on Inner Fidelity and Jude's recent Head-Fi TV episode were enough to sway my choice from looking for a closed can like the Denon D7000.

As far as delivery times go - I'm happy to wait knowing I'm getting a world class product - rather than pressuring you for a quick delivery time.  It's all good.

Your choice has been updated to African Blackwood.  As much as I'd love to take your cash, I believe we will arrange for smeggy to collect the money via Paypal when the time comes.  I am still waiting for two of the original 15 people to fill out the form.  After they have done so, I will provide a the order information I have collected to everyone to ensure its accuracy.  After each person verifies their order, and I check with smeggy to make sure he's okay with everything, we will work out the payment details.   Hope this helps.

Please send me a paypal link and I will pay right away. Many thanks!!!

Thanks so much for this! By the way is there any cable option?

how heavy is Macassar Ebony, (e.g. compared to quilted maple) and how much extra is it?

So after the first 15 people put their order in, is it going to be an ungodly amount of time before the next group order can be made?  If there will be a long wait before the next order, I will probably just go the DIY route.

There's no guarantee that a second group will happen at all. If you're wanting anything, especially soon, DIY may be your best bet at this point, unless of course you can swing the normal price.

I suppose I'll contact Smeggy again about DIY then... oh well.  I tried.

EDIT:  There's no point in my really swinging the full price when, for $200 less, I can build myself a pair.  I know it won't quite be "Smeggy style" but I'm pretty good at these things.

I asked the same question recently regarding my own build. According to Smeggs, the benefit of a cable upgrade on these 'phones is negligible at best.   I am trusting his experience and judgement on this.

At this point it's too early to say whether a second buy will be feasible or not.

Anyway, the Blackwood will be about $20 more as I already have some quilted maple and many other woods. The weight is something I'm currently working on, Macassar and Blackwood and some others do weigh more than the maple or walnut for example but nothing too serious. I'm in the process of working on lightening the cups... more experiments etc. But should work out for the best once I nail it down.

Sorry, forgot the cable question. No, the only options there are the plug size. I don't have the resources to stock multiple types so I standardized on a good quality Mogami which is strong, flexible and non microphonic.

I'm interested in buying a pair of Thunderpants.  I guess it's too late to get in on this group by, but I filled in the form anyway.

Would that reduce the isolation?  I think I'd rather have the current heavier cups if they isolate better.

I gotta say it all started with the endless great reviews, and my instincts were legitimized with Tyll's measurements. I'm so glad and astonished that I signed up right before Jude's video went up. It has been nearly a month of staring at the various, beautiful TPs out there before I decided to bite and email Smeggs. Then he tells me about this thread, and it was an obvious decision of course.

The isolation doesn't change, it's just removing some extra wood from where it's not needed around the rim to lower the weight. The Isolation primarily comes from the pad and seal choice. I have a few different pads with me now to evaluate, not all pretty, not all ideal but it's helping me figure out which are the best options for different purposes. Some want extreme isolation, some want best comfort, others want less isolation. I need to be able to give people an informed choice based on their needs.

I think I will go with max isolation. Does the Stax earpad do that well? Coming from the LCD2 I don't think weight will be a big problem for me.
