Help me choose a soundcard ?

Hey guys

I recently posted asking about advice for a good headset....

So I've just bought a pair of Audiotech AD700 headphones so I can listen to music (classical, instrumental and some soft rock/pop) on my PC. Now I just need to find a good sound card.

Any suggestions? My budget is anything from $75-$150 (although if the soundcard will last a long time I'll consider spending more)

I was leading towards an Asus Xonar ST... or maybe something more affordable.

 What are your thoughts?

Have you considered a DAC?  I mean, if you don't really game or watch movies, a DAC might be the way to go.  However, if you insist on a soundcard, the Asus DX could be the card you're looking for.  It has a great built-in DAC and should power the AD700 perfectly fine.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I just picked up a cheap 'Asus Xonar DG' as the guy at the computer shop said thats all I'd need. Is that ok?

It's a functional sound card.  I've used one for a computer I built someone else.  Save the rest of your money for a discrete DAC (such as the Schiit Bifrost) when you're ready to move up to something several standard deviations better.  Every sound card has a DAC chip built-in, but the chip and implementation tend not to be that great compared to discrete DACs.

Anyway, the DG is fine for gaming and music.  It's not bad, but it's not high-end either.
