Mission: Replace the HiFiMAN ear pads with other brand ear pads - Page 4

Huh, that'd be pretty dark on on HE-400's.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Can't say never heard them, but the HE-6 only changes slightly so it's just a refinement to my ears. Its nowhere near the LCD2 coloration

Do the stock Denon's put the drivers closer or farther than the stock ones?

Further back and angled like a smaller version of the LCD-2.

By the way this also means that J money Dennon pads would also work and they are even thicker than the normal Dennons

I've been using the 990 velour pads with the spacer from the new hifiman pleather earpads.  Very similar sound to the stock velour hifiman pads except with more space.  Seems slightly more detail comes through as well.

I'm almost thinking I should just see if I could get a hold of some stock Denon pads, they do the same thing only more so.

Nice.  Is that the Senn HD600 foam underneath the headband?  I have the same stuff on my T50RPs and need to get some for the HE-500.  Got the 990 pads now as well so will try the mod tonight.  Do I need any type of glue to get the Hifiman back onto the 990 or will the 990 pads just slide into place?  I just moved so stuff is in boxes.  I haven't taken the 990 pads out of the packaging yet either.  However, I gotta say that I'm not finding anything wrong with the new stock velour pads.

You have to put the 990 pads onto the plastic ring that comes with the Hifiman pads. Then it can just snap onto the headphone. I had to get my girlfriend to do it. It requires fingernails.

Yeah it's the sennheiser foam, it was only 8 dollars I think.  I chopped up my pleather pads and used the plastic mounting disk and krazy glue and that was it

Sennheiser USA online (HD580 and HD600 use same foam cushion)

Ebay will work too

I just AB'd the beyer pads (990's) and the stock velour (new rev) on HE500 today. And I must say, the hifiman velour sounds better to my ears. Beyer pads makes a smaller soundstage, less details and less sub-bass.

I'm kinda sad because they are THE most comfortable pads I have ever tried, even the heavy HE500 seems to just disappear (+they are also kinda expensive).

I am sure this is a very personal opinion, but I want to throw out there to the HE500 owners that beyerpads do not improve sound (IMO), but do increase comfort.

I will be keeping mine to have a spare pads, but I must say that if the hifiman velours crack, I most likely just gonna order new ones.

How good is the seal you guys are getting between the spacer-Hifiman ring-DT990 pad?  I'm using quite a bit of rubber cement to get a good seal.  Will let it dry overnight.  I wonder if people don't seal up every little gap there will be a hit to sound quality.
