Those aftermarket Denon pads don't work too well with the HE-400. Stock velours, stock pleathers with jergpad mod, and J$ work well for most people, myself included :) I use J$ for the comfort, but I hear the jergpads sound a little better.

Yeah definitely much more comfortable but sounds terrible.

For people interested in the Marleypads:

Marleypads: A project where I covered the velour pads with leather. Sort of a hybrid of the velour pads and jergpads.

I would like to ask if anyone could tell what's the inner hole diameter in the Hifiman velour earpad?

Or at least if it's bigger or smaller than the DT880/990 velour earpads...

And is there any difference in foam softness hardness?

Thanks!

The HiFiMAN and Beyerdynamic velours have a similar inner diameter. The Beyerdynamic pads are the softest of the two.

I would say

DT990 soft

DT770 medium

HiFiMan hard

Do you guys notice any difference in the rendition of treble and any other sonic trait between the Hifiman and Beyer velours?

Its been a while since I swapped to beyers, I don't remember any large sonic change.

Comfort was my main concern and I would not go back to stock.

The beyers have a heavily perforated driver side and the attaching rim is shorter and so does not cover the holes in the mounting ring (Ala Jerg mod)

So I would say if there is any change to the sonics it would be an improvement.

Thanks, Dogmatrix.

Alternativelly, has anyone tried the Hifiman velours on the DT880 or DT990?

Would like to know how it sounds in comparinson to beyers stock velours...

Hi guys which of the Beyerdynamic pads are recommended?

DT 990 velours or DT 770 velours, both are silver.

Thanks!

EDIT: any idea which are thicker/deeper? the Hifiman velours or the DT 990/770 velours?

I'm going to see how to mrspeakers 'alpha pads' sound on the HE-400 in a couple of weeks at http://www.soundconsult.nl/.

I'll post back how they sound :)

I just finished the DT990 velour pad mod for my HE-6.

The DT990 pads are much more comfortable.  I notice no difference in sound initially, but will listen for a while and change back to compare.
