Hello all,
The thread's topic should be pretty self-explanatory, but let me give some more details. I have recently completed assembling a nice computer for home studio work. This system is not meant to compete with the high end systems I use at work, it is just something that I want to have for semi-professional freelance video editing. All the hardware is in place at this point but there is one ingredient missing - some nice, small near field monitors. The computer is located basically in a corner, there is very limited space so the monitors must be fairly small. Since this is just a secondary system for semi-professional work, I also don't want the price of the monitors to be more than 100$. They will mostly be used for video editing so they need to be quite accurate and balanced and as flat as possible. I also own a Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro and I can use that in the circumstance when such small, cheap monitors simply can't cope (fe. with sub-bass frequencies) but I'd like to avoid using the headphones as much as possible.
So far, I have my eyes on two options:
The Behringer is made out of plastic which suggest it might rattle a bit, but I havent read any reviews that would complain about this. More troubling is that thier rated frequency response rate is only 80Hz to 22kHz. This complete lack of sub bass would be a challenge for video editing where sub-bass cues are often used to add context to the video information.
The Edifier is made out of wood and has bass reflex ports on the back. This implies that it has the potential to produce more bass in my setup (since the bass reflex ports would be facing a wall) but I am concerned about the neutrality of this setup. It is troubling that the manufacturer doesn't publish frequency response on their website and bass reflex is known to produce distorted and unnatural bass. Furthermore, there is no headphone out on the Edifier, which is not a huge problem considering I can just use the one on the computer, but is an inconvenience nevertheless.
As you can see, neither option is particularly satisfactory for my puroses but I think I'm leaning towards the Behringer. Still, perhaps you guys have some better suggestions? They need to be small (say 15x25x20 cm WxHxD), they need to be accurate/neutral and they need to be less than 100$. Any suggestions?
