"Beck & Cauthen Complies With Beck And Changes Band Name"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/14/beck--cauthen-change-band-name_n_963114.html?ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false

(seriously, Beck. WTF?)

Here's a brief bit from the band who kindly and immediately complied with the request:

Quote:
"To our surprise, we got a letter last week from representatives of Beck, who asked us to change it. We don't want to create confusion with Beck, or for that matter Jeff Beck, Glenn Beck, Beck's beer, or any other Beck."

Wow.

I used to think he was pretty damn cool. Maybe he'll end up opening for Metallica at small town carnivals or something, with Tom Cruise as MC. LOL.

(edited cause I realized some folks might consider Scientology a religion and I'm pretty sure my comment would have been TOS related. FYI)

Well, the new name is more memorable, so I guess it's not so bad. I never heard of Beck, honestly.

Because people think Simon and Garfunkel is Carly Simon and Art Garfunkel.

Hall and Oates are comprised of Daryl Hall and Quaker Oats.

It would be one thing if he had a bizarre name like Bjork.  Then If I heard that Bjork and Curry were coming out with a cd I would mistakenly assume that the Icelandic songstress and the popular Indian spice were coming out with a record and would purchase it in error.

Not a lot of details in the article, but my guess is Beck himself had little to do with the request and it's probably coming from lawyers and a label.

I love Beck. He's amazing. The general rule for me is to never make opinions about legal issues unless if I were actually in the court room. The stuff you read in the media tends to be incomplete.

I don't think this is a big deal.

Entertainers (including actors) often change names to keep people from being confused. Hopefully, the band will do well with its new name.

This is not on the same level as Monster going after a minature golf course or pizza restaurants.

When it comes to music, people could easily be confused that Beck was one of the performers. The intent of the law is to prevent something like that.

I have to agree ...

But since I always map my own moral compass on to others (I know this is an impossible and bad thing, but I just can't help it cause I think everyone should think like me) ... LOL ...

If I were Beck, I'd step in and slay the Lawyers ... renounce the label (I mean, really ... does Beck even *need* a label? I think not) ... and say ... (cause it's true), ... "There will always be only one, Beck!" ... and so ... let them have their party ... nobody is gonna confuse a bent up TX country band for Beck. Just ain't gonna happen. I consider Beck a genius of sorts ... my punk rock friends berate me for it but I really love the guy ... a little less now, but I still love him.

That said ...

The dudes names really are "Beck" and "Cauthen" ... so why not describe their musical narrative, thusly? Does "Law" precede birthright?

Such a delicious can of worms.

But all of the above tripe considered?

I too agree that "Fathers of Sons" is way more provocative than Beck and Mausten ... it emotes, begs investigation and is just more generally intriguing.

So, who knows? Maybe they were trying to ride the proverbial coat tails. But even so ... if *I* were Beck? I would have welcomed giving them a lift ...

;-)

ROCK!

The Blue Jeans Cable issue was a lovely read.  This Beck business is not.
