Noobie Question about S/PDIF

I've been messing about on this website for a while and after having purchased a few things, I find myself ready to make the next big jump. I plan to buy a Schiit Bifrost whenever it comes out, so my question is a simple one.

I plan to use S/PDIF from my on board sound card to lead to the DAC. The build quality of on board cards are dubious at best, but my question is: Does it matter? Should I buy a different sound card entirely?

Just so you know, I removed the brackets in your thread title and you are now NAKED!

Just kidding. wink_face.gif

Ok, seriously, I wouldn't worry about about the S/PDIF quality just yet. If you are getting drop-outs in the music, then you have a problem. If not, then you will be fine.

When you've not just learned, but realised our famous slogan, "Sorry about your wallet" and have spent as much as a small, second-hand car on audio gear, you might consider some kind of funky USB to S/PDIF gadget to use with your DAC (which, by then, will probably be using as much power as a small car and heating your room in winter).

It's late, I'm tired and I'm in a silly mood.

Well I need to bump this. Should I be looking to get a new sound card other than the on board one I have? My purchases are about to skyrocket in a month or two by getting a Bifrost, and a Tesla T1. I just need to know if I should worry about getting a sound card or if the onboard is good enough.

What I said above -- that is, don't worry about it now unless you have problems after it is all hooked up (and then usually it's a software problem). smile.gif
