Need to buy headphones/headset but need advice on my current setup.

Hey guys,

As you can see from the title I'm looking at getting a headset/headphone solution for my pc. I need to know from you what you think would be the best way to approach this.

Right now my setup is my pc running hdmi audio to my yamaha receiver. The question i have is will the audio sound better through the headphone jack on the receiver or should I just buy a usb setup.

I also have other options at my disposal. I have a Sb xfi titanium that I could install if that would give me better options. If i get an analog headset I could plug the headphone jack in to the receiver and the mic jack in to the onboard sound I would have to turn on.

Just throwing around some ideas here and I'm not really sure what i should do.

Any suggestions?

Are you wanting something for online gaming or just movies/music? Is a surround sound option out of the question? Your X-Fi is all about the surround sound it seems..

You could install the X-Fi Titanium, then run S/PDIF from it to the receiver and use the receiver as a DAC. In an ideal case, it'll be a stereo PCM signal pre-processed with CMSS-3D Headphone, which should play back through the headphone-out on the receiver properly, though I haven't managed to confirm this.

That's just for gaming, though, and if it's a 7.1 receiver that you'd like to bitstream Blu-ray audio formats to, that's going to complicate things immensely as you'd have to keep switching sound devices.

Ok here is what I ended up doing for anybody interested.

I decided to install the creative XF-i titanium. Setup the optical out to my HTS and plugged in the new siberia V2's I picked up. This was a pain ,as I had to switch multiple setting every time I wanted to go from headphones to the HTS. Also I had problem with games and movies that were previously 5.1 compatible. I could play movies as the optical setup for pass through which was fine, but when I wanted to play a game it would only do stereo. When I enable the DTS/DDlive software it messed up my ability to pass audio properly to my HTS through the optical cable. And once again if I had to use my headphones again I have to go turn all those settings off or it sounds like a bad underwater MP3.

So there was the problem.

The solution was to just leave the HDMI audio enabled and have that pass untouched to the HTS leaving my movies in untouched PCM letting my HTS to do all the decoding. Then leave the sound blaster installed with the settings I required for the headset. Now the only setting I need to adjust is changing the default sound device.

As far as sound quality goes I'm not sure using siberia's would really showed me that much of a difference between the two outputs.

Hope this helps even if just for the info.
