Foobar + Fiio E7 specific resampling

Question obviously pertains to the title.

But I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about resampling for this DAC as it only supports 16bit/48Khz max while some recently bought audio files have 24/96 rates.

Are there any plugins that support just downsampling to specific rates and will skip upsampling?

And should I be using the dither option with 16bit output, or will that affect my current 16bit files as well (I assume it wouldn't but we all know that this kind of thing can be overlooked)?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know, but i play my 24/96 FLAC music only with resampler to 44100 enabled. I'm interested in this thread, probably i'm not using the "best" solution.

I have a E7 and when listening to 24/96 I use the sox resampler set to downsample 2x, output is set to 16-bit with dither checked.

For 16/44.1 I have no dsp's active and uncheck dither.

If you use random play this would not be ideal.  I like to listen to a whole album at a time so I just change it as needed.

Why do you uncheck the dither option? i think is better to check it when the output is set to 16bit.

I'm using downsample to 44.1 for this reason, for not change the resampler all time :S

Oh, I thought dither should only be used if I was downsampling from 24-bit.  So I should use it even when not playing a 24-bit file?

I read more about it and is no sense to activate dither for 16bit if is a lossless 16bit file. So you are doing it fine. The problm is configuring that any time do you want to play a 96/24bit file :S

Probably there is an option can be programed in foobar2000.

Heh, yeah. If only foobar had the auto-profile options that I can enjoy with ffdaudio. If anyone knows of a plugin that I'm overlooking that can handle this or if it's hidden in the advanced options then let us know.

I'm going to keep looking.

Edit: Just found this: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=67373 and saw that the modified version supports telling the plugin to only resample on certain sample sizes. e.g. only resample 96khz OR resample all BUT 96khz

Can anyone vouch for the quality of this plugin though? Curious as to how it compares to the built-in PPHS resampler or other plugins.

And yup, going to test it now.

Well, I'm not sure of the policy on double posting (didn't see anything that said don't do it >.>) but I did want this in another post for anyone else reading this:

SQ seems similar, if not the same, when using the 0.6.0 modified version of the plugin from my previous post (and the skip/exclusive resampling options do seem to be working perfectly) but right now I'm only using the E7 and will edit this post with more info after I've had a chance to test it with my E9 later today.

Still, is there any conclusion on bit dithering in this situation? I'm curious as to how much it could -possibly- affect SQ when dithering existing 16bit files and whether applying dithering to 24bit improves SQ at all (obviously not in a bit-perfect sense) vs truncating the extra bits.
