Sound Card Issue

Hi everyone I am new to this site and was reccommended by a friend and would really appreciate t if you guys can help me out. I just bought a Logitech z906 and when i plug 6 channel input into my Hp Pavilion A1640n with built in soundcard Realtek ALC885 the green plug acts as a normal aux input and provides the same sound to all speakers. When i go to test it on the volume app and yes its configured as 5.1 on both normal sound app and realtek manager it only makes noise to left and right speakers. I have no idea why this is happening. It says my sound card has 7 channel support but is a very old pc. I also have a digital coaxial input. Do you think that would work giving me 5.1 sound or should i just buy a new soundcard? Please HELP!!!

Perhaps "install SRS Audio Sandbox it totally worked for me ... Now i am able to play 5.1 surround through all 5 speakers....."

The CNET download for the SRS Audio Sandbox:

Let me know if that fixes it.

well i downloaded it and it says "SAS is configured for 5.1 Surround sound" and status is no with a red X and it doesnt let me auto correct, has no other option that i see. Also i have it set to 5.1 on both realtek manager and the regular 1 in control panel. Idk what else to try. It seems i have to adjust a setting but dont what.

Take a look at this video and see if it helps:

Also try downloading the latest version of drivers for your  Realtek ALC885 on-board soundcard.

ive tried that like a million times lol. and on the realtek manager too. ive gone to device manager and right-click on soundcard and click check for updates and it says they are up to date. im beginning to think its the soundcard because ive had this pc for so many years and never even touched the soundcard but it does say it has 8 channel support. im going to buy a digital coaxial audio cable and see if that works. if not I'll just by a new soundcard. Thanks for the help though. I appreciate it.

Do you have the yellow connector plugged in as well as the green to your computer?  You need both to have the rear speakers produce any sound.  Also, be sure to test both the green and then yellow through the same color input on your soundcard to make sure both sets of speakers work.  In other words if the green input on your soundcard produces audio plug the green connector into and check those speakers, then the yellow and make sure the back speakers work.

Here is another quote from a forum:

"I have been using logitech z906 5.1 surround sound speaker from last 2 years now. Initially I also had this same problem and I was also confused. I had posted in many forums and had to wait a long time to actually get some solution to get worked out for me. I had done many things but nothing worked. Then I tried one solution. Someone told me to install the rear speaker into the side speaker slot for output. I did this and my speakers worked. So I would recommend you to do the same thing. "

Best of luck

Now it seems its the subwoofers orange and black input that is broken because i plug all the cable into the green in the subwoofer and they all work when i test them one by one on the green input on subwoofer. Im going to try to replace the subwoofer thanks for helping me find the issue.

I know on my setup, which is different than yours, I go from Blue(front) and Green(back) to the sub and the sub powers the speakers.  Both front and back from my PC go to the sub and the sub drives all of the speakers, but the computer.

Perhaps that will help too.

i didnt quite understand what you meant there but i did numerous testings. Plugged all three cables for PC(mines is green orange and black) and it only works no matter what when a cable is plugged into the green in the subwoofer. its not my soundcard or anything because ive tried to play sound from different devices and it only plays sound from whichever cable is plugged into green. for example if orange cable (center and sub for me) is plugged into green i will only get sound from the center and sub. its the orange and black inputs on the sub that dont work. Theyre already sending me a new one i hope it solves my problem. I really appreciate your help.

What I mean is you need to plug all of the cables into your soundcard at once and then the other ends into the sub.  This way your soundcard will drive all of the channels within the sub not just the green cable.

ive done that ive plugged in all the cables to the color it matches and still nothing. i even tried plugging the orange and black one by one on my laptop to test and they didnt work but when i plug the green it works so it has to be the subs inputs. Ive tested putting the orange and black cables on the green input of the sub and they produce sound so its not the cable thats broken its the subwoofer.

It sounds like you have it figured out.  I know there have been issues with the board on the sub.
