Westone CM IEM Cable and ER4 Adapter Review

I recently purchased a Black Dragon cable for my Etymotic ER4s from ebay'er 'Awwan' along with one of his interchangeable B/S/P adapters. I will be speaking mainly to the build quality of these items as I have much more listening to do with this cable. I also must admit that I am not driving from a dedicated headphone amp - as such, I use the low impedance adapter (P). Anyways, with that disclaimer out of the way - let's talk about these new cables.

First off, the stiffness is much greater compared to the OEM Ety cables. This is to be expected and although some may gripe about this, I actually enjoy it - you can feel a certain quality when holding them. You can also see the braiding through the sleeve, it almost looks like chain-link - a very nice, functional aesthetic. The 3.5mm Pailiccs plug is a nice touch as well, though I must confess that there is a small gap between the outlet and the cable as the shrink wrap does not completely fill the space.

Onto to the other side of the cable, I really am impressed by the new fittings that connect to the AW Audio adapters. IMO, these are the style Etymotic should have gone with to connect to the driver - even if just for sake of flashing some knurled gold and colour-coded L/R bands (Blue/Red) - it looks classy. The fact that the new adapters are rotatable make for easier fitting as well as packing into a case. I also like new combination of 90 degree adapter and ear-guides; it really removes a lot of the microphonics I used to hear with the OEM pig-tail setup. A shirt clip would be a nice add-on but for the most part unnecessary as the microphonics are greatly reduced with the ear-guides.

Overall, very impressed with the cables in terms of build-quality - definitely worth the money if you appreciate that sort of thing. Based solely on the build quality and aesthetics, I would purchase these cables to replace the OEM set - it's a nice addition to an already very nice set of IEM's.

Onto the sound quality... it's great. Honestly.

Obviously it's not a day vs. night type of thing, I don't think it's meant to be. The difference, in so far as I've observed, is more of a subtle increase in clarity; the shortcomings of my portable source have definitely begun to come through in the music. I will post an update in a month or so when I upgrade my headphone source and get the 'S' adapter - I don't think writing a proper review based on listening to a potable source is of much value - so I won't waste anyone's time with that.

That's all for now, pictures are coming as well as some more description once I've owned them for a bit longer and get a chance to listen to them on a proper source.

Hello

I would like to buy the same combo for the Etymotic ER-4P. May I ask if the cable includes the adapter, as indicated by the image at the bottom of the following page?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHURE-IN-EARPHONE-UPGRADE-CABLE-BLACK-DRAGON-/290550527952?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a62937d0#ht_3111wt_1114

If the adapter is not included: Which of the offered adapters would I have to order?

Do you have any more comments about your experiences? Everyday use, ruggedness, build quality, sound quality. I want the cable mainly because of the 90 degrees adapter, as this seems to make the wearing of the Etys more comfortable. But of course build an sound quality should be good.

Thanks.

I don't know if that listing is for the adapters as well - I do not think it is.

If you email awwan he will be able to give you a price for the adapter, you'll just have to specify which one you want. If you want the ER-4P then here is the 'P' adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ETYMOTIC-ER4-IN-EARPHONE-CABLE-ADAPTOR-P-/300592438250?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45fcb49bea#ht_8247wt_806

The cables have treated me very, very well in the last few months - no complaints at all. The 90° adapters are quite useful, since they also rotate, it gives you a little more flexibility in adjusting the over-the-ear guide to your ear shape/size. Sound quality is top notch - I don't experience any microphonics wearing these!

But ya, great quality cables and awwan is a real nice guy so if you have any questions just shoot him an email and he should be very happy to help out.

Thank you for your reply. Which exactly was the cable you bought? The one I indicated?

And do I understand you correctly that the p adapter is for the er-4p? (I'll have the er-4p soon) I cannot quite understand which adapter does what and if there is any conversion from er-4p to er-4s, and if yes, how this is done.

I just bought the following adapter from Awwan:

http://www.ebay.com:80/itm/ETYMOTIC-ER4P-ER4S-RESISTOR-ADAPTOR-3-5MM-PLUG-/290372905689

Now the next step would be a cable with an 90 degree adapter, to be able to wear the er-4p over the ears. Or does the cable/adapter combo by Awwan provide both the 90 degrees and the transformation from er-4p to er-4s?

You see, I am a little confused here. What shall I do?

Thanks again.

What I want is simply to wear the er-4p over the ears with a 90 degrees connection between cable and IEMs, as well as the possibility to change the er-4p into the er-4s and vice versa, whenever I feel like it.
