Recable Jvc RX-700 and Koss Ksc75 (w/ Pics)

Hi, I'd like to start off by saying I am completely new to forums but have done LOTS of browsing in the last few weeks. I have some Koss Ksc75 Clip On headphones and Jvc RX700 headphones coming in this week. I haven't heard them yet but they are cheap and get pretty good reviews almost everywhere online. I'll have them burning in all day as soon as I receive them. I'm definitely going to mod both of these headphones but would like to get my facts straight first. Here is what I plan on using.

Mogami 2534 (Is this too this for a Ksc75 Recable? If Not, would 2893 be better or something different?)

Neutrik NYS231L (Heard this works perfectly with the thickness of Mogami 2534 wire)

Nylon Multifilament (what sizes are best? So far I've heard 1/4" for the mogami 2534. I plan on using the sleeving up to the y split and then using transparent heatshrink to the drivers)

Heatshrink (For the two braided wire going to the drivers, would 1/8" heatshrink be good? I plan on using transparent of black.)

Solder. What works best and where can I buy it?

I have this soldering iron: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062728&filterName=Type&filterValue=Soldering%26amp%3B%23047%3BDesoldering (is this fine or should I buy a new one?)

Last question, is desoldering braid necessary? if so which one and where can I find some?

I have soldered before so the actual labor part of it seems fairly simple.

Sorry about all the questions. Just want to make sure before I order from redco.com most likely. I'm located in U.S.

Edit: I will post step by step pics in this thread when I get my items and begin the process.

You'll need braid for desoldering the drivers from the cable. unless you want to use the same muck they use in the factory.

Okay, is there any specific kind of desoldering braid or solder that should be bought?

I got some ratshack 1/8 copper braid. it had flux in it. You just need something with flux in it thats it.

So does anybody know if the soldering iron I have will work fine or if I need something like a 30w.

It will take you a long time to solder I suppose but it will get the job done at some point in time. I'd go 30-50. 30 being better.

Ok thanks for the reply. So i think i'll just buy one from radio shack. Could I also just get the solder and desoldering braid from there? Also I already ordered everything I should need from www.wirecare.com and www.redco.com and I should have everything by next week (shipping from wirecare is a bit expensive). Everything, including shipping (had to order at least $20 from wirecare.com to avoid extra charges) came out to about $50. Will the soldering iron work for the heat shrink tubing? or possible a hair dryer?  I already received my ksc75 and my rx700 should be getting here on Friday.

Anything that produces heat will work with heatshrink. Iron, hairdryer, lighter <- what i use. You can get the iron solder and braid from radio shack. Just know its either expensive, crappy, or both. I use ratshack stuff too, braid and solder, but when I run out of solder I'm buying some name brand solder.

btw you may find that 6mm cable is too heavy for clip ons. heatshrink is pretty stiff too. I imagine those clip ons are going to possibly be the stiffest wires on single headphones ever. no offense. I left my 4 litz braid bare. then at the split just had a bare twist. simple. effective. nice slippery teflon.

Thanks for all the help Pingupenguins. Do you think they would still be too heavy it I used the Parts Express Replacement Headband? I already ordered 2 which should be getting here soon but if not I'll definitely keep what you said in mind.

Yeah the headband will eliminate the heavyness I think. I've never used 6mm quad on portable headphones before. Only like bigger ones like Skullcandy Aviators.

Just an update: Have already received both headphones. Will do mods to both of them whenever my other shipments come in and I re-cable both headphones. Been burning them in a bit with some loud music but not excessively loud.

Any new pics? I'm curious to see what is going to happen.

Update: Unfortunately, my order from Redco is taking a while to get here. Earlier today, the tracking information said its barely in Denver but hopefully it'll get here by Friday. This morning I received two packages. I received the nylon multifilament sleeving and 1/8" heatshrink for the part from the y split to the headphones on the KSC75s. The sleeving seems very nice but I don't think I'll be using the heatshrink as it just seems pretty stiff as you said. I also received the headbands for the KSC75s this morning and they seem a little flimsy. They do however stay put pretty nicely and are tighter on your ears. Depending on how heavy the wire is I may order some Mogami w2983 but regardless I'm still going to try it. I will update when I receive the rest of my orders and start recabling.

Everything has come in. All I need to do now is buy a soldering iron, solder, and desoldering braid. I'll be buying all of this from radio shack. I'm going to get a 30w pencil iron and standard desoldering braid, but want to know what kind of solder I should get. Is there any specific kind? I see rosin core, lead free, silver bearing, etc.
