A couple of months ago I bought the HD438 headphone. I thought I should get an amplifier to complete the set - source > amp > headphones, but I bought the Sansa Clip+. Now this was an improvement over my PSP > HD438 but I soon fell in love with the Grado modding thread. The M50s were getting a lot of mention back then so I decided to try both the SR80 and M50 out the next time I went to the audio store. It turns out that I preferred the Grado house sound. I read somewhere on the forums that the higher the impedance and the bigger the driver, the bassier the cans. A couple of months down the road, and a lot of auditions, I bought the Grado SR60i. I figured I could do with a bright headphone since I've got the HD438 (dark headphone). I started to contribute to head-fi, giving advice to newcomers looking for "low-price" cans, wrote 3 reviews, iirc etc. I did some light modifications on the Grados. A little bit of cup filing, grill-removing and quarter-modding. Was happy.... for a couple of weeks.
I was (technically still am) still missing an amplifier. So again, I started looking for amplifiers. FiiO E11, PA2V2, Fiio E7 came to mind. I'm going to purchase the E7 tonight and by the end of this week, I hope to be long gone from this site. Why? Because I can't afford it. My audio gear totals up to be S$438 (retail price). That's a lot to spend on a hobby in the course of just 3 months, especially since I don't come from a well-off family. I've seen people spend US$400-500 on just a headphone, and I fear staying on these forums will eventually lead me there.
How to stop spending money on audio equipment?
In my case, quit head-fi.
So everyone who's helped me along the way, I thank you. Malveau, Chrislangley, Chris(dat cable guy), Wje, the other Grado modding guys, the guys helping out the newbies in the "Buying headphones... look here.." thread, Botbyte, Bcasey, kiteki, nwav, and the HD4x8 modders. I've lost my temper with some people along the way, and I sincerely apologise for that. Although there are a small % of people who have misled others with inaccurate information, all in all, Head-fi's a really good resource. All the best to Head-fi, the admins, the regular contributors and the others who are just getting into the hobby.
Will be quitting head-fi on D-day, H-hour.
It's D-6 day today.
