A friend of mine who has the beats says a big factor in getting them was the look and the culture surrounding them. Can't really go wrong with that.
Earlier this year, I shared the listening experience of a pair of Grado SR-225 headphones with wooden cups. He loved the clarity and the bass that was produced. He thought the sound was really quite amazing. Then, a few months later, we were over at their house and he wanted his son to show me his headphones. His son brought down his pair of Beats. The father asked me what I thought of them. Granted, I have never heard them, and often scoff at the cheesy gloss plastic appearance, I was a man of few words when it came to providing an answer. If they guy hear how well my Grados sounded and then a few months later was pretty impressed by his son's Beats, then I have to question how good is his judgment? What does he really prefer? Maybe, he should be honest with what he likes - he wouldn't hurt my feelings if he said he thought the Beats sounded better. I know with my Grados, I have a more realistic sound and a much classier headphone.
