Choosing Between Sub-100$ Headphones

Thread Starter

Hello, I'm looking for some sub-100$ headphones for listening to indie rock and various nonstandard electronic music (chiptune, Crystal Castles, Chemical brothers, etc.). So far, I've come up with this list of contenders:

*Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones (Overbudget?)

*Grado Prestige SR 60i

*Koss Porta-Pros

*HARMAN K81DJ Akg Closed-Back Folding Dj Headphone

*Kicker OEM (monoprice Hifi DJ) or the actual HP541

*Samson SR850 or the Superlux HD668B

Build wise, I need something decently durable that won't irritate or overheat my ears

Thanks, DrDublin

Save up for the M50's. You'll be well rewarded

The Superlux 681 are also good and have a more 'fun' sound w/ a more v-shaped signature, as well as being cheaper than the 668B.  Both are good headphones, depending on your preferred signature.  For comfort's sake, I'd recommend a pad change though--but since the headphones are so cheap, you'll still stay under budget.  AKG has velours that fit, and the SHURE 840 pads also fit (surprisingly--also, these added a bit more bass).

The SR60i is also good, but you should replace the pads on those as well.

I personally wouldn't pay over $100 for an m50, especially with the other options available.

Grab the M50.. 668 is very good for the price, but can be uncomfortable, especially if you wear glasses..
