sorry if this is in the wrong forum tongue_smile.gif

i just finished ripping all of my cds to alac for archiving purposes, and all the bitrates were in the 800+ range except for songs with hidden tracks (which contain silence)

the lowest bitrate i got was 189. the song was chris cayton by goldfinger, and it's 36 minutes or so, most of it silence. i'm just wondering why it's so low. does it affect the quality even though it's supposed to be lossless? i'm a noob so i don't know lol

No. Bitrate doesn't say anything about quality with lossless, quality is always the same as the original. It only says how much compression there is on average in the track.

The more silence you have the more it'll be compressed. Lossless codecs find patterns (like long stretches of silence), then replaces those patterns with shorter segments. During playback the segments are replaced with the original data.
