Well that's fine for me, honestly.  My TV speakers are never pumped up all the way-- even for movies they're only about halfway.  I've no questions with the A2s' ability to output loud sound, my only concern is the ability to output full sound at low volumes-- something which the TV does not.

The Behringers don't have rca connectors, I really would need RCA.  They also don't seem to have the best reviews compared to others.

I'm still debating the mackies right now.

I don't know how you plan on controling the volume but the active monitors only have volume adjustment, not full range volume pots. I own the bigger passive behringers the B2031p it's very clear to me that everyone who gives these behringers negative reviews saying they sound "harsh" "tinny" etc has never even heard them they just discredit it because it says behringer on it, there actually  very accurate and detailed sounding speakers, connecting up the behringer b2030 you would need a TS to rca cables. I've never heard the mackies so I don't know how good they are.

Well I'll probably take advantage of AudioEngine's 30 day trial program with the A2s to see if they're loud/full enough sounding for the living room, and then return them if they aren't.  If they don't work out, I'll look into the Behringers.

I use my AV40s for my tv, and they are more than suitable for that use. The BX5As would MORE than suffice, so I imagine the A2s would too.

That's good to know.  I get the feeling a lot of people on head-fi are accustomed to loud levels, from headphones to speakers.  If the RMS of my TV speakers is 10watt per channel, and the A2 is 15 watt per channel, it sounds like the type of power I'm looking for.

You also have to take into account the efficiency of the driver (normally measured at 1watt @ 1metre) when calculating max spl, watts are meaningless by themselfs also you have to double the amount of watts for every 3db increase in volume.

I've been giving it some more thought, and even though I'm really leaning towards the Mackie MR5 MKIIs, does anybody with experience have any knowledge on a passive 2.0 setup that's around the price of the MR5 MKIIs but provide near the same audio quality?
